Rumor has it that the rim reaper is still in the hospital...Carmen put up a fight and laid into him with some good shots.
RIP champ....when people talk old-school, Carmen was the prototype - legendary toughness and determination and a champion inside the ring and out.
Bread of the earth, these kind of men are a rare & dying breed...Great tough fighter, great tough man....RIP ...Basilio
Fighting the way Basilio did meant a great level of sacrifice. We remember him and others like him today because it's that kind of sacrifice and resolute, non-stop belief in oneself that WE want to identify with, that WE want to be. There's nothing heroic in our minds about avoiding punches, be it in the ring or in life itself; we too want to feel the sting of the blows, to taste the blood, and to carry on in spite of it. Watching those fights becomes a microcosm of how we want our lives to be led. We imagine ourselves to be as tough, and we find solace in that. It's a nice legacy.
I was such a huge fan. RIP to one of the best fighters to ever live, and to the model example of professional conduct in the ring.
R.I.P. I was actually afforded the opportunity to interview Carmen in April 2010. Tremendous warrior and a very nice man. A real crowd pleaser.
