Man he gave it all in that ring, a force of nature but also a very humble and kind man outside the ring, R.I.P Earnie you gave us so much amazing memories.
My old man and I were watching the Shavers-Holmes fight. My father jumped up yelling "the fights over!" when Shavers put Holmes down....but Holmes got up from that bomb. RIP Champ.
In his mid 50s he was head of security at a bar in Liverpool, a safe bar i am sure it was with Mr feather fists in charge. Thanks for the memories Mr Shavers, RIP, your fists sure rattled a few brains cells in your time.
Wow, a tough couple of days with Riasco, Bigfoot Martin and now Shavers passing away. RIP to them all and thank you for entertaining us.
I feel like he's one of the best HWs ever to never win a world title. I guess coming up in the Golden Age of heavyweight boxing was both a blessing and a curse. May he rest in peace.
One of my greatest memories of my years in & around boxing as the Black Tie affair at the Annatole in Dallas. Where the rich came to play. They had stars from all sports there & a boxing card was like the cabaret. The boxing stars on our table were Smokin' Joe Frazier, The Bronx Bull Jake LaMotta & Earnie Shavers. We'd been warned , needlessly, to be wary of Jake but he was a laugh a minute they all were . Someone mentioned Randall Tex Cobb's name & Earnie said " Man that man must have had concrete poured into his chin I hit him with punches harder than Ive knocked men cold with & Tex grinned & said My Missus hits harder than you Earnie That all you got " I honestly thought I was losing my power lol" " Toughest SOB I ever faced & we became friends after" Three great guys & great champions they really made my night Rest In Heavenly Peace Earnie One of boxings most feared punchers But also one of boxings good guys When he shook my hand he said "Well we both have a mutual friend in Tex Small world isn't it"
He will always be the standard for heavy hands! Thus, though he never wore a belt, he really is one of those people's champ types. RIP, champ.
