I remember seeing the look in Holmes’s eyes as he first realized what happened. Earnie didn’t scare people like Tyson or Liston, he had too friendly a smile. What Earnie did have was EVERYONE’S respect in the ring. They knew that it only took a second’s carelessness to go from leading a fight to sleeping tight when the Acorn was in the ring.
Not something bad....but in this book that Dog the Bounty Hunter wrote they had pictures and whatever together and they called him Ernie Shaver. That's all I needed to toss the book back where I got it.
You can get a sense of his general niceness from his book. He admits to cheating on his wife in the book, and then every time he talks about relationships he mentions how sorry he is that he treated her like that. He can't even bring himself to hate King.
Not to be morbid, but has there been any indication as to the cause? I understand Earnie was 78 yo - in fact passing the day just after his birthday. One report read that it was a “sudden” passing - which I took to mean “sudden” to the family, not just the public at large.
Sure, though in this day and age people are living longer…but the crux of my post was that it was described as “sudden” in at least one report. It may never be specifically revealed - and so be it with due respect for Earnie and his family’s privacy. As morbid as it might seem - I tend to check on these things.
