People make Schaeffer out as some kind of genius, but the tools were all there for him to run with. HBO and private investors pumped a lot of money into the company and then they recieved all the hype from the big name fighters as owners. There's a ton of executive people out there that can run GBP just as well. GB has a sizable stable of recognized fighters, a ppv level fighter, tv deals with Showtime & Fox, and now another possible outlet in HBO. They'll survive.

I think where Haymon wants Schaeffer so badly is due to Schaeffer's knowledge of any possibly illegal activities they might've been doing, but also Haymon needs/wants Schaeffer to setup an alternative promo outfit.
Rick Glaser reported on on how Haymon was offering to trade fighters for Schaeffer and more recently $18mill.

Due to Haymon's contracts as a advisor, he's not allowed to form his own promotional company and Mayweather's hoodwink promotional outfit is just a tax shell. If Mayweather's promotions were capable of promoting their own fights, they would've years ago rather than paying millions to GB to do it. Haymon fighters will continue to earn money through GB for the immediate future. However the day is coming when fighters are going to open their eyes and realize Haymon is a just a modern day Don King, stagnating careers and taking a big chunk of their pay check. Haymon earns you more, and takes more from you.

do you think fighters are so dumb(i will say it is amazing how dumb alot of them can be)....that in reality while haymon gets them their top purses...hes taking so much that they are in turn actually making less or the same they would without him?.....i dont think so.....if he earns you more....and takes more from you and you are still taking home more than you would have otherwise its still a good deal

stevenson made twice his career high payday for fonfara.....even if haymon takes a good piece...if its still more than he made previously at the end of the day its a win for stevenson.....he made more for fonfara than hbo was offering for him to fight kovalev

haymon doesnt want schaefer because of any alleged illegal activities knowledge.....maybe they were participating in illegal activities for all i know....but that would mean they both were....do you think schaefer is gonna come out and rat haymon out for fun? no one is making richard out to be some genius...but he was pretty damn good at what he did...its not about him being some boy wonder genius...its about him having great relationships with the people he worked with....he was pretty honest and trusted...people actually liked him and he did a pretty good job....you mention the deals with showtime and the sizeable roster of recognized fighters....how do you think those came about? his relationships with espinoza and haymon...richard built the right relationships to put them in a successful spot.....hes not a boy wonder genius....at the same time he had golden boy in a pretty good spot....if it aint broke why would you wanna tear it down....he was doing real good business without needing TR or HBO for anything....all of the sudden this notion that having TR and hbo is going to open up amazing doors and avenues...well...we shall see...i dont think so myself...but we shall see
