It is. Henry Cooper as well. I think Frazier dying was the one that saddened me most; there was something about that era in boxing that was very special.
Quite a few gone in recent years, yeah. Sadly, the next generation (1980s HWs) been quite depleted already too. Greg Page, Trevor Berbick, John Tate, Mike Dokes and Carl "Truth" Williams all gone. In their 40s and 50s only.
I had the same thought when I heard of Ellis' passing. The heavyweights of my youth have almost all passed on.
RIP Jimmy! :-( Interesting that he was older than Ali, got a late start as a middle, and became Ali's sparring partner in the early mid-sixties. His window of prime, so to speak, surely came with the Elimination Tourney in 67 and after. Four straight wins against Martin-Bonavena-Quarry-Patterson. An empressive lot to say the least, plus his valent effort against Frazier in early 70 was impressive. How did he keep getting up? A fine fighter and a gentleman.
Sad news indeed. Jimmy is best remembered by Australians for coming over here and fighting Joe Frazier in the mid 70s. RIP Jimmy Ellis. You will be fondly remembered.
Yes, Ferdie thought Jimmy's right hand would land too easily on Joe for Frazier to win, and it did land but Joe proved unless your name was Foreman he could take anyone's punch very well. Jimmy was a personal favorite and came up along way from a struggling middleweight to the WBA title. God care champ.
I have never surprised to hear that Ferdie Pacheco is wrong about something. He gets my vote for worst big fight commentator.
