What sad news. Remember watching him against Conteh who I loved but I really feared for John in there Matthew had such an intimidating presence. The knockout of Mwalle was truly devastating he was simply never in a bad fight. The words True Warrior are overused for boxers but they were made to describe this man. R.I.P.
An amazing talent, who live long in the memory for some of them wars of the late 70s/early 80s. But lived a very hard, sometime tragic life.
RIP Champ. I'll never forget as a little kid running outside and almost shaking my dad off a ladder demanding that he come in and see this fight (Saad - Lopez II). I'd never seen anything like that fight and don't know that I've seen more than a handful like it since. Then I saw him blow away Mwale, and Vonzell Johnson, Murray Sutherland, and Jerry Martin all had their moments. But by then I had no doubts Saad would come back. Great, great warrior.
I am gutted and totally shocked by this, sad, sad news. It doesn't seem more than 3 decades ago that he was in his pomp, thrilling fights all the way. Matt doesn't seem old enough to have passed. I saw Matt described once as a good fighter but a great champion - I always thought that was an appropriate description. A great, great champion, he left his heart and soul out there time after time. Thanks for the memories... RIP Champ.
Matthew Saad Muhammad, was a great guy and great fighter!True warrior ! After all those wars his face was still intact and was a nice guy! R.I.P champ! God Bless!!!
gave us a lot of excitement in his day, I always thought he had the ability to come back from the brink of disaster...died too young RIP Champ
RIP champ! A true all-time great. Being from Indy, I finally got the 1st fight with Matthew and Marvin in Philly (and was near ringside when Johnson defended against Franklin in Indy) The first fight was a war. How many bouts have you seen when, after the 10th round, you really don't know how to score the fight because both of them were trading and landing constantly? But Matthew iced him. Great fighter!
