Damn another great Heavyweight goes to battle the likes of Dempsey, Tunney, Johnson, Louis and Smokin' Joe inside the pearly gates.

Not sure how familiar most on here are with Lyle, but the guy was the epitome of tough. His wars with Foreman and Shavers will live long in my memory.

If you haven't seen these fights, do yourself a favour. Without a doubt would've been a World Champion in this day and age...

    RIP Ron...

Exciting former heavyweight contender Ron Lyle has unfortunately passed away at the age of 70 in Denver, Colorado, after complications from a sudden stomach ailment.
Lyle fought Muhammad Ali for the heavyweight title in 1975 and his knockdown filled brawl with George Foreman the following year is considered to be one of the greatest bouts in boxing history. Possibly the hardest-punching fighter of his era, Lyle had a career mark of 43-7-1, with 31 KOs. Fightnews sends our deepest sympathies to Ron Lyle’s family and friends.

    37. Ron Lyle

    43-7-1 (31)

Best Wins: KO2 Buster Mathis, KO3 & W10 Larry Middleton, W10 Gregorio Peralta, W12 Oscar Bonavena, W12 Jimmy Ellis, TKO8 Boone Kirkman, KO6 Earnie Shavers, W12 Joe Bugner, W10 Scott LeDoux.

Best Losses: D10 Peralta, L10 & L12 Jimmy Young, KO by 11 Muhammad Ali, KO by 5 George Foreman.

One of 19 children, Lyle was arrested as a teenager for a gang murder and sentenced to 15-25 years. While inside jail he was knifed and spent 7 hours on an operating table, during the course of which he was pronounced dead twice. While inside Lyle learned to box and managed to turn his life around. After being parolled he had a short amateur career before making his professional debut at the advanced age of 30.

Lyle turned out to be one of the most formidable punchers the Heavyweight division has ever seen. He was avoided by many of the eras better fighters. He was leading on points before being stopped by Muhammad Ali in the 11th round.

Perhaps his most famous battle is his brutal 5 round shootout with George Foreman. It was the kind of fight that shortens careers with both men teeing off on each other in what is universally recognised as one of the greatest fights in the history of the Heavyweight division. Both men were down twice and the momentum shifted back and forth throughout. Lyle made a brief comeback in the 1990s in an attempt to lure Foreman into a rematch but was unsuccessful.
