Truly sad news. The ref quick stoppage of the fight now on reflection after this sad news, might well have prevented Simiso Buthelezi from actually dying in the ring on camera, if his opponent had been allowed to resume punching. Rest in peace young man.
He wasn't the guy who fell into the ropes. He was the guy who started shadow boxing after the guy who fell into the ropes made it back to his feet.
The 24-year-old faced compatriot Siphesihle Mntungwa for the WBF All Africa lightweight title on Sunday, but the 10-round contest was stopped by the referee after Buthelezi appeared to shadow box an invisible opponent. Footage of the fight showed Mntungwa falling through the ropes and then, after the fight was restarted, Buthelezi advancing towards an empty corner where he started to swing punches. Mntungwa was declared the winner and Buthelezi subsequently collapsed and was rushed to hospital. He was placed in an induced coma after it was discovered he had bleeding on the brain." Rest in peace
Somehow it had to been, although he apparently had clearly been winning the fight, which makes it that much more odd. Never saw anything like that ever
That footage of him punching the air was truly haunting, I had a bad feeling the moment I saw that, so I really hate like hell to hear this. RIP Simiso.
RIP Simiso. By all accounts, he was winning the fight prior to this incident and hadn't sustained much punishment in return. This therefore is a reminder that sometimes any punch, no matter how innocuous it looks, can still catch you wrong and do a lot of damage.
the footage of him throwing punches at an invisible opponent is disturbing but should it really be given as a loss? surely out of respect it should be a NC ? let the man die undefeated This content is protected
RIP terrible footage on video I've never seen anything like it. Even if you call it a slip, not a knock down, he was the one pushing forward and throwing. He was winning and looked to be the more experienced fighter. There was no single big shot that seemed to hurt him. He likely had an epidural hematoma which can be intervened on with a decompressive craniotomy (removing skull to alleviate pressure from the bleed). Him surviving depended more on how long it’s been going on for, and how far he is from a hospital that can actually perform the craniotomy.
