RIP Terry Downes

    Apologies if this has already been done. But I just found out that the former middleweight champion died on Friday.

    The Paddington Express may have been a bit limited in terms of approach, but he was good at that approach. Ultra-agressive swarmer who made life miserable for a lot of good fighters, from a faded Sugar Ray Robinson to Joey Giardello to Paul Pender. Dude even gave Tiger a good fight in only his third pro fight.

    He was tough, aggressive and exciting. And, as stated before, he was good. Would have been good in pretty much any era, I think, and considered really good in a lot of them.

    I only Googled him the other week to see how he was doing these days. That's sad news. Not the greatest of middle s but at least he got the belt round his waist. A no nonsense fighter for sure.

    Very sorry to hear this, he was in this months Ring giving his thoughts on his best opponents.
    You always knew when he was in the house at the fights.! Game honest fighter!RIP

    Very sorry to hear about this.
    He was a real character and no nonsense tough guy.
    If it wasn't for Angelo Dundee he probably would have been World Light Heavyweight Champion as well.

    For me he was part of the boxing scene of my youth and therefore part of my growing up ,and I regret his passing .How you feel about it is your business.

    I was ringside as a lad with my father, his friend was cornering a fight. I think it was Gordon Ferris. Terry Downes was there and jesus the stuff that come out his mouth was shocking, and I mean horrendously bad lol, definitely didn't give 2 ****s who he offended. RIP Terry Downes

    Terry was fighting Willie Pastrano in London for Willie's World Light heavyweight title.
    For 10 rounds Downes bullied Pastrano and was well in the lead after the 10th
    When Willie sat on his stool Dundee launched into a foul mouthed tirade against him saying unless he got his arse into gear he was losing it, the fight was on TV and you clearly heard the F word coming out of an animated Dundee's mouth.
    Well it certainly did the trick, a reinvigorated Pastrano came out for the 11th like a man possessed dropped Terry twice and the referee stopped the fight!
