Sanatali Toltayev (Kazakhstan, 4-0) vs. Danylo Alexandrovich Lozan (Ukraine, 14-0), 6 rounds @ super lightweight

 

UKR & KAZ ...a couple of traditionally very strong amateur boxing programs from the former Soviet Bloc - perhaps second only to Russia itself and, especially in the last decade or so, Uzbekistan.

Toltayev had a deeper amateur career than Lozan, but they both had lots of international / European tourney experience.

 

Nobuto Ikehara is the Japanese ref, btw.

Oh no kidding - former pro, bantamweight contender in the aughts. I kind of remember him. He's officiated over a thousand bouts since retiring, must have just not noticed him before now.

 

You can see it's clearly a high mutual skill level here when they're working from mid-range, but the 1st round is marred by several clinches and toe-steps. You almost have to expect it with orthodox versus southpaw.

 

Erdman calls Toltayev and his twin brother (working the corner) the "Kazakh Charlos".

Toltayev was pressing in, trying to make it a phonebooth fight, and walked into a peach of a left cross that put him down hard. Then saved by the bell.
