I stopped reading here. This is a false statement. DM is every bit as responsible for not fight Jones as Jones is for not fighting him. There is NO angle from which you can lay it entirely at Jones' feet. And Jones beat every other champion in the division. 12 of the 15 fighters he fought at LHW were top 10 rated (many top 5) or champions. That's a good run through any division. Jones didn't dodge Lewis either. Lewis admitted to turning down a $25mil+ offer from Jones while commentating on HBO saying he was unsure if he planned on fighting again.
Robinson didn't fight everyone else. Granted his resume is absolutely stellar and definitely not lacking in overall competition, but he never fought the following... Charley Burley Holman Williams Cocoa Kid Lloyd Marshall Eddie Booker We should not take anything away from Robinson, nor should we drop him in the rankings because he never faced those guys. And while Jones' resume isn't as good as Sugar Ray Robinson's, we shouldn't lower his placing for what he didn't do. We should look at what he did do and how he did it. In that case, I'd say Roy makes the top 100 with anywhere from 60-75 places to spare.
havnt you read the 10 clazagments?:think we...ergh:roll: them are to accpet he gets dropped gets hurt and can be knockedout and that the reid fight was close. but he is the fightest fighter ever head 2 head and will give anyone a really tough test
And he did. But I felt that DM was starting to show signs of slowing down just as Jones had. They missed their opportunity for a huge Prime for Prime matchup in the early 2000's. DM was a better fighter than he showed that night. Still, a good point.
I was a Rochachinni fan the night DM got the Oscar. I became a DM fan really when he gave Hill a boxing lesson. I never ever said DM was perfect. I became a rabid anti Jones fan, back when it was "Jones is god, when Tyson was not in shape." And they had never heard of DM (how come that I don't know) or seen a fight of his, but gave him total disrespect because he was not an american..... There was a number of well informed posters who are no longer with us, who brought the whole thing out....... Beltless Jones, after Griffith won, was "willing" to fight DM for $4 million which was 2 1/2 times his best purse. Hill had just gotten $2million his highest pay day, and Germany's highest pay day to that date...and Hill brought two belts to that fight. After Jones got back his belt, HBO had that clause that didn't allow them to mention DM's name. I have always said, in spite of how I dis on Jones's and his fans that I saw a fight in thier primes as 6 to 5 for Jones. Harmon said, Jones is more athletic, but DM hits harder. I kept saying then and now Jones was not undisputed Lt.Heavy Weight Champ... And it was much more Jones fault that that fight never happened....would you take 1/3 as the main man in the weight to fight some one for belts that would be stolen from you again? :huh DM should come to the US fight some chump in an empty stadium to get known...??? that was the Jones's fan's suggestion..atsch He was fighting to 15,000 sold out Hamburg Stadium and getting a couple of million from TV money in Germany.... It got me in my reactionary mode....but others who use to post back in the good old day's, really proved it was 90% Jones's fault that no fight happened....DM was willing to take 50% and fight inthe US....Jones's was the one with the clause in his HBO contract that Forbid the mention of DM. Not DM.... I really wished I'd been wise enough to copy what better informed men said. I can't respect Jones. And I respect his "Jones's is God or was in his prime" even less. He knew what he was doing and beat a deep path to his bank...his fans just kissed his bull **** covered basketball shoes.:tired He never in any weigh class unified. He never tired. He was never undisputed champion much less the one and only champion of the world. Some how his fans just can't get those simple facts into thier worshiping minds....
So basically, DM shouldn't have had to go to the US to fight Jones, but Jones should have had to go to Germany to fight DM. DM had no right to 50%. Jones didn't steal his belts. He had nothing to do with DM getting stripped. Jones was P4P #1 at the time, and held three of the belts. Bottom line, he held all the cards. Meaning he could have made concessions to get the fight done, but in no way shape or form did DM deserve parity. It has always been this way in the sport. The bigger name holds the cards. Placing the sole blame on Jones or DM for that fight is ludicrous. Both fighters were at fault.
This is so true. Why do boxing fans persist in believeing that any fighter they don't like always ducked his "real challenges"? It's never the other guys fault or even that both sides were to blame or any other number of reasons why a fight never took place.
Big name where? Jones could walk the street with his pen in his hand in Germany and never give an autograph. He was as invisible in Germany where the big money was, as DM was in the States were there was little money..... DM was getting more money in Germany than Jones was getting in the States till Ruiz.
You said DM was getting a couple of million from TV. Jones was making 5mil a fight from his HBO contract before Ruiz. I would be willing to bet that Jones was better known outside the US than DM was outside of Germany. Jones was the draw. He held most of the cards in this situation. He would hold the cards during that time frame against anyone but Tyson, Lewis, and DLH. The Lineal title hasn't meant nearly as much as it did since the late 80's. Also, Jones had the Ring belt, which was gaining alot of notoriety at the time as it does now. It was both their faults. DM could have conceded something, Jones could have conceded something. Neither would.
