I find that hard to believe. Hes currently a color commentator for HBO, trainer to the likes of Jessie Vargas and Jean Pascal, as well as stil picking up some easy checks for fighting. If he was broke, he wouldn't be fighting twice a year.
My thoughts exactly. Until recently, he wasn't fighting that often, and he could have fought much easier fights than Lebedev etc. He's now targeting Marco Huck. But he doesn't need to fight him. He could fight 3-4 times per year against the level of fighter he fought last week. It seems clear to me that he's not fighting solely for the money. You only have to watch and read his recent interviews. He feels good in the gym, and he doesn't want to let go yet, because once it's over, it's over forever. IMHO, if he'd got Bill Gate's money, he would still be fighting today. He just loves it, and he's been doing it since he was a young child.
We know how it would play out though don't we? You've got to give him credit for wanting the fight though. There's literally about a hundred different guys he could target instead.
He owes the IRS 3.5 m in back taxes. The fact that he took that Hopkins II fight knowing that there was a very good chance he would get paid nothing (and thats what he got) speaks for itself
You won't give him credit for anything. So he only fought Hopkins again, just because he needed the money, and for nothing else? Like you've said, he hardly got anything for that fight. That fight was in April, 2010. Yet despite hardly making anything, he didn't fight again for over 13 months, until he fought Lebedev. What does that tell you? He was also out of the ring for 18 months after he'd fought Glazewski in Poland. Just because he owed tax, it doesn't necessarily mean that he didn't have the money to pay it. It's clear that he isn't fighting solely for the money. It's also clear that had he got billions of dollars, he'd still be fighting today. Because he feels good in the gym, and he doesn't want to retire yet even though he should do.
Owing the IRS doesn't necessarily mean you are broke. I remember reading recently that Roy was worth 20 mil... Not sure how true it is.
http://www.foxsports.com/boxing/story/Roy-Jones-Jr-back-taxes-040711 The story originally broke in 2011.
Okay so that might not be current. In fact, it almost certainly isn't. Were he already that delinquent four years ago you have to figure some of that is paid down by now or else he'd be in jail. Between regularly commentating on HBO, doing his victory lap abroad with the fights in Russia, plus royalties & residuals from his raps and boxing DVDs etc, that # has to have changed.
Floyd Mayweather also owed the IRS millions, as well as other famous people too. But Roy's resume doesn't read like a fighter who's been desperate for money. Now he's no doubt spent a lot of money throughout the years. A few years ago, Zod spoke of how he'd spent fortunes on his music career. Then there's obviously the mansion and the cars etc, along with having three sons and helping them with their music career. But how much has he earnt over the years? He apparently got over $15m for the Ruiz fight alone. Then add up all of his HBO contracts. He got $4m for the Hill fight way back in 1998. Even after he was past his best and he'd left HBO, they were reports that he'd been paid a guaranteed $3m for fighting Danny Green. Then there's the commercials, the films, and all the commentary that he's done, as well as training fighters and his promotional company etc. He must have made millions of dollars. But like I've previously mentioned, IMHO, he'd still be fighting today even if he was the richest man on the planet. :good
I would also assume that it's more than likely been cleared up, as we've not heard anything. But I don't really know. But I know that he's earnt millions of dollars, and I find it hard to believe that he's burnt through it all. Again, look at his resume. He made nothing from the Hopkins fight, yet he didn't fight again for over 13 months. The story broke in 2011, just before he fought Lebedev. But after fighting Alexander and Glazewski, (I doubt they were big paydays) he didn't fight again for over 18 months. I doubt that a fighter who was in desperate need of money, would have spent that amount of time out of the ring.
