I didn't realise that. I'll look out for you on there. I haven't posted there for a while. Yeah, I've read Klompton's posts. I saw the thread you're referring to. It was great. I never read it in it's entirety though. I remember Burt quoting Greb, where he apparently said that Dempsey would have killed him after 6/7 rounds. What a great era. :good
Toney was a great fighter also. You say that other MW's-LHW's could have moved up and beaten him, but we don't know that. Theoretically, you could make a case for a few guys. But then you have to ask the question: Would they have been willing to have done so? In 2002, Roy didn't have to fight his way through a queue of other LHW's who wanted to try their hand. If Ruiz was as poor as what some people claim, then guys like Rahman, Evander and Golota etc would have beaten him with ease. If you'd have fed a domestic/euro level HW to Evander in the early 00's, he'd have chewed them up and spat them out. Ruiz was ugly. He was dirty. He wasn't great. But he was tough, effective, and not easy to beat.
It was more than solid. Look at Roy's age. Look at the number of fights he'd had. Look at the size disparity. Look at the ease in which he beat him. It wasn't just an okay win. It's not everyday that a 34 year old LHW goes up to nearly 200 pounds to easily dominate a 235 pound top 10 ranked HW.
:rofl :rofl :rofl "I never said nothing to that guy!" What a character. In the behind the scenes documentary for the Roy-Ruiz build up, they cut out the part where Alton Merkerson punched him. Ha!
:good It's as simple as this: Yes, Ruiz was far from great. But he was a genuine top 10 ranked guy of his era. How many former JMW's end up beating ANY top ranked HW with absolute ease?
The Hopkins win is underrated. Roy Jones dominated Bernard Hopkins. He couldn't really do any damage because Hopkins is so defensive minded and cautious. Hopkins is a spoiler. You don't look good against Hopkins. Sergey Kovalev did, but come on the man was 50 years old by then. All I remember is Hopkins feinting, clinching, mucking it up and then throwing about 10,000 weak jabs and missing over and over. While Roy Jones would overwhelm him with speed. He would land a few sharp punches and then back off. Hopkins wouldn't allow anything more than that. He was like a clam. He just did nothing. It's not Roy Jones' fault that the fight was a snoozer. Bernard Hopkins is the epitome of snooze. That guy loved to finally open up when the opponent was low level, tired or small. But put him in there with a fighter as big and gifted as Roy Jones and he's doing nothing.
Actually I agree with Burt's quote. I've always thought that in a shorter fight Greb would be too slick, busy and elusive for Dempsey ... but over a longer haul Dempsey would catch him sooner or later. Klompton disagreed and pointed out that Greb's gas tank was immense, whereas Dempsey could gas late. :conf Anyway, yeah, I suppose if I had to pick somebody to take on prime RJJ it would be Greb.
Yes he did dominate Hopkins. I'm interested, what did Hopkins actually do that fight? Feint and do nothing, but throw weak jabs and go into his shell? What in the hell did Bernard Hopkins actually do except just go ultra defensive? He was completely dominated by Jones. And with just 1 hand. The cards weren't even close. And the fight was even less close.
John Garfield (Joe Rein) was an elite poster and a great guy. I learned so much from him, as well as from Burt. All 3 of us are native New Yorkers so we would reminisce about things like the old Sunnyside Gardens. He is really missed.
All good points Loudon. Nicely put. Darius was very good, but I believe he and Hill would've suffered several more defeats had they been around during the Spinks era. I wouldn't rate either one as highly as some other posters on these boards would.
That's how I see it. I'm going to have to try and retrieve that thread unless it's still ongoing? I've heard that there's a great book out on Harry Greb. I'm going to have to look into that. I went to see my Grandma yesterday and I came home with my Grandad's Jack Dempsey biography by Randy Roberts. I'm looking forward to reading it. :good
