She is taking on a 40 year old Canadian, herself a onetime contender, now 8-8-2, named Natasha "The Nightmare" Spence.

Jovanis Rodríguez Pallarés vs. Alvin Welch, 4 rounds @ super welterweight

 

Both men have one professional boxing match under their belts: Rodríguez Pallarés is 1-0 and Welch the opposite at 0-1.

Rodríguez Pallarés' debut was here at 154lbs, while Welch's, nearly a year ago, was down at featherweight. Welch is also 5-2-0-1 in pro MMA, but that's in the bantamweight division (which in that sport is 126-135lbs).

So he's here to get crushed, basically.

Rodríguez Pallarés also trains in MMA but hasn't competed officially in the sport (and is a black belt judoka).

Welch is listed as orthodox but has switched to southpaw to mirror Rodríguez Pallarés for much of the fight so far. Guess he's a switch-hitter.

 

RJJ himself finally joins on commentary. The play by play guy is so audibly relieved. He'd kept promising every couple of minutes "he'll be here any moment, I promise..."

 

Pretty evenly matched. JRP was busier throughout, Welch smothered him in close and landed some pretty effective counters from outside (including a straight left that stunned Rodríguez Pallarés, winning Welch the second round)

 

Welch will be back at this same venue (Yakama Legends Casino in Toppenish, WA) in November in an MMA match.
