The first bell rang almost two hours ago, but the broadcast on UFC FightPass still isn't live yet; counting down to 11pm EST it seems. Running commercials for UFC events and Conor McGregor hype pieces. Blah.

 

Yeah, but as low-quality as it may be I have at least heard of a few names on the RJJ card.

(as opposed to literally zero recognition glancing @ the ShowBox lineup)

 

Denis David Douglin vs. Mike Guy, 8 rounds @ light heavyweight

 

Mama's Boy should win but 38 year old Guy is a tough and determined journeyman. He went the distance with Ali Akhmedov and came just thirty seconds short of doing so with Derevyanchenko (in his only stoppage loss).

 

Douglin has said he promised himself and his family that if he loses one more bout, his pro career is over, but until then he's making one last push toward a world title.

 

Round 1

Douglin is jabbing into the guard to stem off Guy's wild charging pressure, and then flipping left upper-hooks between his forearms into his chest as they collide together in awkward shoulder to shoulder grinding clinches. Guy is unloading nonstop on Douglin, emptying his clips, gunning for a blitz KO and obviously not building his strategy around trusting in his pushing-forty gas tank. Douglin is holding up pretty well although he does take a few stray power shots high on the head while leaning in attempting to swallow Guy up and contain him by clasping his arms over him while getting pushed into the corner.

Guy sort of fills the same niche as Douglin, except a rung or two down the ladder. Both are the kinds of guys that are known for being the B-side and generally losing (in their nationally televised bouts anyway) but acquitting themselves well and making their opponents look bad in the process.

 

Round 2

Douglin is doing a slightly better job now of nullifying Guy's swarming and two-fisted rhythmic twisting & weaving inside to fling bombs at point blank. Douglin is working the right jab, unrolling it to its full length when he can generate the proper distance with his feet, and otherwise abandoning it and yanking Guy into a tight hug to snuff out his bursts of firepower.

@CST80 you're missing Douglin...and the co-main event features yet another familiar TV-friendly C-lister in Golub.

 

Round 3

Douglin is able to hold Guy at the outer end of his southpaw 1-2 for the most part, scoring high up on the shaved pate and into either cheek of Guy. In desperation to land his shots now that he is spending less time on the inside, Guy is taking leaps of faith inside with heavy overhands, and their heads come together as the inevitable byproduct of an orthodox vs. southpaw match-up, and especially one in which you have somebody flying in and the other holding their ground. Bad cut on Guy. Douglin able to pick him apart from a distance with the right jab as Guy is deterred more by the cut now than he was by any of Douglin's counters previously.

Two cuts, apparently. Both were ruled accidental by the ref, one from a headbutt and one from incidental contact with a shoulder.
