When it's all said and done, Calzaghe is a great fighter. Losing or beating Roy is irrelevant to that. He sits a top of the all time 168lbs rankings. Although it's a division short on history, Joe has carved his niche.

I don't know too much about what happened regarding Hopkins/Calzaghe a few years ago, and with Jones ect, but Warren has recently insinuated that it was Calzaghe's fault that he never went to the US to fight before.
yes, Warren is no longer with Joe, ect, but it kinda adds up.
If it wasn't entirely Joe's fault, he'd surely have found another high calibre opponent instead, but he really did have a weak stretch there for a while.

He has stepped it up though, which is good. :good

The fact of the matter is, why would he leave??? He wasn't going to get paid more in the US than he was in Wales. It's only since he battered Lacy and Kessler that big money offers have enticed him to head stateside.

Cotto v Margarito didn't even sell out. Calzaghe v most, prior to Kessler/Hopkins etc, wouldn't either.

No seriously mate my knowledge of Australian boxing was very poor so i made a concious effort to post on this forum to bring it up to speed , that and wind Teke up ,During the last few weeks ive become a grandad for the first time and lost my father so when got offered a $tart up in the north of England i accepted it after talking a few things through with the Mrs , so i won't be able to post here as often as i'd like to :-( ,You lads are ****ing hilerious and Aussie ESB is the best on the net imo :deal but fret not TEKE i will popp from time to time just for the Crack ...

Ippy hit the nail on the head ( As Per ) , Joe has carved out his niche in 168lb'rs and on the minds of boxing fans world wide , love him or hate him the kid can box .

Here are the words of Jay Larkin also:

..."A teleconference was set up in my office in New York for July 30th, 2002, and on the call was myself, Don King who was in the room, Frank Warren and Bernard Hopkins' lawyer, Arnold Joseph. Along with Arnold was a woman named Linda Carter, who was there on behalf of Bernard. We asked Arnold if Bernard wanted to fight Joe Calzaghe and we asked him how much money would he want if he did. The response we got was $3million and the fight would have to take place in the United States. After a little scratching of the head, we said 'Okay, done.' Frank Warren agreed on the spot, Don King agreed and we agreed so as far as we were concerned all parties were singing off the one hymm sheet. Arnold excused himself with Linda and I can only assume it was to call Bernard. Either that day or the next day, they came with a new demand: $6million, dobule the sum that had been agreed, the deal blew up.....he had then and still has no desire to fight Joe Calzaghe, that much is pretty clear."

True, financially it's a much better risk/financial reward situation for him, but a win against Hopkins back then would have given him some big money fights and more respect, and legacy.
You have to remember that before the Lacy fight, Calzaghe wasn't very well liked, even by many Brits, and this was because of his fairly poor resume up until that time.

Imo, he left it too late to unify, ect. At least he's done it now though, but still, it's a shame he wasn't in this frame of mind a while ago.

Fair enough, but it still doesn't explain why he'd go from just missing out on a massive fight with Hopkins, to fighting someone like Evans Ashira.

I could never be convinced that quality like Ashira, Thornberry ect was the best available to him at the time, and the list is a lot longer as well.

I might have to do something similar to the brit forum, though I'd probably find myself talking more about football than boxing. :p

yes 100% correct mate , even i raised an eyebrow when they waltzed Evans in but we all knew the Lacy fight was agreed by then to take place on Nov 5th 05 , Joe saw a chance to grab a couple of million making a worthless defence pre Lacy as Lacy was fightingScotty Pemberton i think , ..Joe was frustrated having to face blokes like Rick when Warren was building on his investment but like you say he has stepped it up in recent years . BTW I saw The thornberry fight and despite Rick coming to fight Joe's preformance that night made Rick look good . That was probably one of the worst preformances EVER by Joe Calzaghe , people mention Tocker Pudwill all the time as well but he stepped in when Thomas Tate **** out with a week to go , in effect Pudwill saved the bill and deserves credit for getting in there with Joe in the first place . Ps City are flying at the moment , Top half of the championship , Way hey :happy

The Championship is a great league to watch, and theres great quality there too.

I like Bristol City. It was a shame they didn't go up last year. Would have been a great rise considering they were in league 1 the year before.

Hull were also in league 1 not long ago, and now they are sitting in the top 6 I think beating teams like Arsenal away.
