A DM win would have boosted his legacy but it wouldn't be counted as a better win than Tarver/Toney/Hopkins/Ruiz if it actually happened in say 98-00
I highly doubt that unless you mean by the weird anti-Jones fanatics, but why count them? Every big time fighter has a group of bat**** detractors.
DM beat two fighters who beat Toney, his record is a good one. He beat Griffin, whon you list here. He KO'd Rocchigiani, a much underrated fighter of that era. RJJ didn't need DM for his resume, it was great anyway. But boxing missed out on what could have been a terrific fight.
I think you are offering your own opinion, which I respect, but not the majority. Darius can't be considered a great fighter. He's a hugely successful European fighter but that's it. Not great and not close to being great! Jones only fought two great fighters (Toney and Hopkins). His record and resume will stand the test of time based on those wins, "dazzling" solo efforts and a title win at heavyweight. Adding Darius to that would not satisfy as many people as you seem to think. The linear argument is bull****. Foreman was linear at Heavyweight in the nineties. Was he the best heavy? Hell no!
Saying linear is bull**** is bull****. We'll have to agree to disagree. Either that or I'll be reduced to showing you that Sam Langford gif again, only it won't be as meaningful in this thread.
Its not always bull**** but it can be! Sam Langford wasn't meaningful then and that **** kicker dance he was doing isn't relevent now either
I would make a difference, but considering the high positions we are talking for him in all-time great P4P terms, and having Michalewski on his record might not make the world of difference. Now becoming the lineal light-heavy champion is a definately story, but again, how many places could that push him up when he's already mixing it in the top 30? Oh, and Jones UD 9-3.
