big toney fan but i just dont think he can do anything to offset rjj's higher work rate and far superior speed.
Same as when they fought. Toney´s feet are stuck in cement while Roy´s quite quick on his feet and much faster with his hands. Wide UD for Roy.
toney was a better HW then jones by a considerable margin IMO. considering the circumstances of the time I'd say toney stops him late. unless you want me to buy into the theory it was weight loss and not age that led to his rapid downfall?
Jones. Superior footwork and he won't be standing in front of Toney. And James is not running this guy down. Jones does the quick hands, in and out, and just scores the points to a decision win. No risks at any time and never exchanges or stays in the pocket waiting for a receipt. Toney will be out of range and not able to land enough punches to win the rounds.
Styles make fights, so Jones UD 120-108 Watch his fights with Woods, Ruiz then his first fight with Tarver - he looks allot older. Tarver is a better fighter but Jones just looked terrible and was gassed by round 5 - the commentators talk about him gasping for air. Listen to the commentary, they said Roy looked terrible after losing the weight and told them pre-fight he couldn't put any weight back on. BTW a better HW? Jones won every round against Ruiz, Toney went something like 8-4 with him
Losing that solid muscle from the Ruiz fight to the Tarver fight at his age ruined RJJ. I assume if RJJ had stayed at heavy, he'd have had a couple impressive fights left in him, & decisioned Toney again.
Even in the woods fight he looked to be slipping a bit imo. How to put this into words, jones fought ruiz like he didn't belong at the weight. Toney fought ruiz like he was a hw. Plus he has the wins over holyfield, booker, guinn, peter 1 and his draw with rahman (not watched it for a while so can't make a real comment other than accept the official result) From 03-06 toney was a top class hw and campaigned successfully at the weight. Jones had a great victory and then left the division. For the record i'd loved to have seen both against byrd who probably had it in him to be a great lhw.
