It's 13 years ago today, that Roy went up to HW to fight John Ruiz for the WBA title.

Roy was 34 years of age and he'd had 48 fights. Despite him conceding 3 inches in height, 6 inches in reach, and 25-30 pounds in weight, Roy dominated him with absolute ease.

All things considered, it was a great win for Roy, and in hindsight it should have been one of his last.

It was a marvelous display of Jones' talents. What really surprised me was how much a 199 lb Roy Jones could actually hurt Ruiz. Facially, Ruiz really looked like he'd had his @ss kicked by the time the fight was over. I agree this should've been the end or near the end for Roy, it would've been a great victory to go out on. I guess finances dicated otherwise.

I don't think finances had anything to do with it.

He was never going to retire at 34.

I'm certain that if he was a billionaire today, he'd still want to fight.

It was a good performance but nearly as good or important as some of his more crazed fans would like to think.

Yeah you're probably right...... at this point Jones suffers from advanced Holyfieldism. Just hope it doesn't get him killed or handicapped. It would've been cool to see him try to fight Tyson like he wanted to.

Brilliant performance from Jones, he should never have moved back to light heavyweight after this he could have won a title at cruiser weight.

RJJ's signature win, it's the fight that made him a star outside of the hardcore fans. It was a great performance, I didn't expect him to be in such total control.

With hindsight the win lost some of it's lustre with Toney repeating the feat but at the time it was a huge risk for Roy to take. It was a shame that after such a career defining win he would fade so badly and so quickly.

That was Roy's last great performance. What really irks me are all these revisionist historians who were predicting a competitive fight beforehand and then calling Ruiz a weak paper champ after the fact. People forget that Ruiz was a legit top 5 heavyweight at the time and with the exception of the Tua fight, was never dominated and had wins over quality heavyweights, a sneaky right hand and an awkward herky jerky, clinching style. Jones nullified all of that and beat him in the same fashion that he beat so many light heavyweights beforehand. Lastly, 9 out of 20 writers picked Ruiz to knock Jones out prior to the fight. After Roy dominated him, they began to diminish his victory. The quintessence of human nature and ego on display. Most people hate being wrong.

I couldn't have put it better myself.

One of Roy's biggest critics was Ron Borges. He thought that Ruiz would be too much for him.
