Thanks! Yep, Borges and 8 other writers along with many fans I spoke to picked Ruiz. Everybody forgets the sentiment going in.
Remember when Toney knocked Holyfield clean frapping out....something Tyson never came close to doing.
That's true, nobody other than Tua dominated Ruiz like that during his prime, which shocked people, even those who had picked Roy probably didn't think he'd win in such dominant fashion. Yes with hindsight, Ruiz was a carefully picked opponent and the way Toney beat him as well exposed a flaw to speed in regards to his jab and grab style but it can't be denied that the risk was real. It's one thing to pick an opponent that much bigger than you thinking you can win, it's still takes a ton of courage to actually go through with it. The fact Roy pulled out before from a fight at heavyweight before with Buster Douglas when Roy was prime shows that stepping up was always going to be a huge risk. Also the fact we saw Roy utilise his often forgotten jab shows that even he thought this fight was a big risk and he couldn't just fight like he always did.
What fight were you watching? :huh That never happened. Holyfield beat the count and the referee was going to let him continue his corner stopped the fight. That isn't knocking someone "clean frapping out" :roflatsch
Both MW's he lost to are multiple division champs, were considered top 1 or 2 P4P in their prime, first ballot HOF'ers and have ATG skillsets.... atsch Ruiz, like him or not was a top 5 heavyweight, who "everyone" had trouble with. It was a great win...
Toney was a decent HW. I don't think it does anything to take away from Roy's win over Ruiz. Though I picked both Toney and Roy to beat him, there was much more of a clear size advantage for Ruiz vs. Roy, making Roy's win more spectacular. Plus Roy beat him first. I see that criteria used when evaluating other wins, why forget it here?
