The muscle loss Roy went through after the Ruiz fight clearly, IMO, had an adverse effect on him. I honestly don't think the extra muscle Roy put on made a difference in the way the fight went. As a LHW, all he would have had to do to make 190lbs was be well hydrated and wear heavy clothing. Roy even said he had no intention of defending the WBA heavyweight title, he just wanted the challenge. So, would it have been more advantagous in the long run for RJJ to have fought Ruiz the same size as he normal fights at (LHW).
He probably should've, but I don't think he would've been able to take Ruiz's shots like he did if he hadn't, Ruiz did tag him hard in the first round a couple of times and later in the fight. IMO he should've stayed at Heavy. He seemed like he wanted to finish out on top with a fight with Tyson, but he should've fought Byrd and then tried for Lewis... even if he got KO'd, he still would've got more praise for even taking the fight. Ahh... hindsight
I think the extra weight gave Roy some more power, He stunned Ruiz on more than one occasion almost knocking him down once. That made Ruiz hesitant on throwing punches, because Roy was making him pay with his great speed and decent power.
I don't think it did affect him that much. What was Roy's weight fight night exactly? And naturally? I guess it's around 180-185 He gained maybe only 5 pounds of muscle?
At the same time though, I believe moving back down to LHW and winning the title back in his very next fight (even though it was ugly) added something to his legacy.... I think he should have retired right after beating Tarver.
The funny thing about this is that I don't think he won back the title, but rather he always had it, he wasn't strip and didn't drop the belt yet. Oddly, Jones after the TARVER FIGHT SAID yea he is getting old and how much the weight drop affected him. He went on to say that if he can't get a fight with Tyson, then he is done -- that he will retire. How different it all would've been, had he done what he said he would.
He was stripped, Tarver was the LHW Champ when Roy dropped back down to fight him. Remember Tarver taunting Roy? Saying that Roy hated the fact that the belts looked so good on him? And Roy actually said before the first Tarver fight that the weight loss hurt him and he was about a 7/10. It was not an excuse for a poor performance, but knowing before hand that you were not your best. You could see it on his face when he was walking to the ring.
I believe his weight was 193 on fight night against Ruiz? RJJ is a phenomenal natural athlete, I believe his walking around weight is around 185 or so. So maybe a 5-7 pound weight loss Trying to lose the muscle would have affected him. An athlete like RJJ, they build muscle easily, and they keep it. While burning off fat can be easy, trying to burn off muscle is MUCH more difficult. Its taking someone with an already low, single digit bodyfat percentage, and trying to elevate their metabolism to even more than usual while calorically depriving them so the muscle gets used. Its wrecks havoc on the metabolism and is just unhealthy. The amount and type of exercise wears the body out. Its then difficult for the metabolism to readjust
