Here's a fun one, since RJJ went all the way up to 193 vs. ruiz, how about RJJ against great small heavies: Marciano, Frazier, Walcott, Dempsey, Patterson. Guys who could have met Roy half way at 185-190.

Frazier woud've been the worst for him IMO. Smoking Joe was never given credit for how fast he was of foot and hand-his left hook unfurled in split seconds. I think he'd KO jones inside 4 rounds with his power, speed and pressure. Maybee the best pressure fighter above 175 in history-look how frail and hopeless he made Foster look. He had the speed of foot and hand to catch Jones too. Marciano is interesting, because he was a great pressure fighter, had awesome power and a good beard...but he was slow of foot and may not have been able to catch up with RJJ. I think Patterson would be a less immediate version of Frazier, his combo of physical tools and superior power and size would get RJJ out of there pretty early. Haven't seen enough of Dempsey to judge. Walcott seems like a toss up. Anyone else wanna chime in on this one?

Frazier kills him between the first and the third.

Marciano is embaressed but gets to him eventually.

    Patterson is outpointed.

Dempsey gets to him over 15.

    Walcott...that one is fascinating.

Jones would beat Charles at HW IMO.

I think Jack Johnson could trick Jones onto him sooner or later, and is probably fast enough in terms of reaction time to avoid the embaressment some of these others might suffer, win or lose.

I think Patterson smokes him early with a left hook.

If Roy had to consistantly fight the bigger guys, he wouldn't have been so successful, especially over 15 rounds. Ruiz doesn't come close in terms of talent or accomlishments to all the the mentioned prospective opponents.
I pretty much agree with McGrains analysis, except for Ezzard Charles.Prime Charles would have beaten Roy. Ez was just too good of a boxer-puncher.
With these guys, Roy couldn't depend on the speed and reflexes. At his best, Roy was wide open, and these ATG's would have been able to exploit Roys flaws, unlike Jones' contemparary hand picked opposistion.

I thought Roy weighed 200 against Ruiz. Anyway, 1 Frazier left hook on the jaw would have him eating his meals through a straw for 6 weeks.

Incredibly unfair question. Too unfair for me to even give a logical answer.

    thats typical patterson sundrome.

he might be weak chinned and not be big enough to brawl nor box.

yet his left hook can end the fight for anyone.

this is why it's hard for people to get a fair assesment of his head 2 head status because of how he could knock you out with out winning the fight. or totally the opposite

Patterson is a bad style just as fast, bigger and more powerful he would KO Jones with a flying left hook.

Interesting question. I like Jones over pretty much anyone 160-175 head to head even those with better resumes than him. However the only time we have seen Jones above 175 was when he fought Ruiz. I don't think I would not favor him over too many ATG heavyweights but I think aganst the smaller ones Jones can beat them.
