Roys speed was unreal, im not saying patterson wasnt fast either, but roys speed was ridiculous.

They are the two fastest HW's of all time in terms of handspeed.

Jones is faster. The question is, what else does Patterson bring? Plenty, but I still favour Jones to speed/tough it out for a points win.

In a series of three? He would lose at least one by brutal KO. Jones is a favourite to me, but not a big one.

Roy underachieved, there's no doubting that. Compared to the talent he has, his resume is shallow.

    Robinson ducked:

    Marshall
    Burley
    Williams
    Cocoak Kid (blatantly)
    Jack Chase
    Eddie Booker
    Bert Lytell

and if you want to be harsh:

    Archie Moore
    Jimmy Bivins
Tiger Wade (until very late in the day)
    Shorty Hogue.

I'll turn 18 in a month, age doesn't have a thing to do with it, just research.

Anyways, Roy blatantly ducked Charley Burley twice, a guy who offered him the biggest payday of his career, and Ray refused him flat. A guy who would've been one of the two best he'd ever faced, along with Kid Gavilan. He also managed to not fight a list of Black Murderer's Row opponents of the era like Jack Chase, Lloyd Marshall, Holman Williams, Eddie Booker, Cocoa Kid, etc.

The same can be said of quite a few fighters of most eras. The view of the casual public isn't always the correct one.

All listed would lose to a prime RJJ, none have the skill to compensate for the difference in physical ability except maybe Patterson, but even he would fall to Jones.

    Roy Jones-Boxing-Roy Jones

The date today is 0004 AJ (After Jones)

You are quite right, your attitude is spot on.

Get into what you are interested in. We're not in school here!

As to coming up short in a particular debate? So ****. Doesn't matter. Here's where you can learn about boxing by talking about it.

Cocoa Kid was the most blatant duck. Robinson was scheduled to take on an unamed opponent in a charity match - when the promoters sneaked in the Kid - a great, great, great slick boxer - Robinson balked and refused to fight.

Burley is my pick as #2 all time WW. It's a terrible shame these two couldn't have got it on as they were pure peers, peaking at around the same time. Burley would have fought for free. The reason it didn't happen is Robinson didn't fancy it.

There are some that will tell you Robinson expected to lose. At WW.

Arnis---- welcome to the site by the way alot of very knowledgable guys in here. Personally I think your a little off base with RJJ's career but it is your opinion. I don't know how much of Roy's career you followed but a ton of the fights that could've happened where NOT Roy's fault, it was confirmed by HBO that Frankie Liles, Nigel Benn, and Steve Collins, all turned down what would have been there largest pay days. I won't even get into Hopkins. When Roy was considered #1 p4p, and the win over Hopkins, Hopkins wouldn't except 60/40. The only fight that I believe roy could've took and didn't was DM and that was just as much as DM's fault as Roy's. I personally don't blame Roy for not wanting to go over there when he was on top.

3 thoughts on the many interesting posts:

1-if the promoters snuck in Cocoa kid, then I'd hardly call that a "duck" by Robinson. That said, he was a man who picked his fights like they all do.

2-I've heard that a lot of people avoided prime Jones, including Calzaghe who amusingly enough now calls him out intermittantly with strong rhetoric..

3-In addition to strength and power, I feel Smoking Joe would have been so unmanagable for Jones and other smaller guys because he was so fast. I said this in my original post and it seems to have gone under the radar. Fraziers foot speed was awesome-he got to ALi with no problem, Frazier was not light, or especially nimble of foot, but he could really "get there" and he was very balanced too. He IMO would be one of the worst matchups for smaller guys coming up, cause he had full-sized heavyweight power and overall body strength, but they would have no advantage with speed. Of course RJJ would have a hand speed advantage over anyone...but Smoking Joes ability to to cut down a ring with his footspeed was amazing

Ali in his prime was a faster HW than Patterson and RJJ

Frazier vs Jones would have ended FAST. Frazier brought down guys that were HUGE compared to him. Too much heart, unending stamina, and power. With his style he would eat Jones up.

No. Maybe faster with his feet than Patterson(and we didn't see much movement from Jones in the Ruiz fight because he didn't need it) but not faster with his hands than either.
