It's a negotiation, and Canelo's team put 152 on the table. If they played hard ball, maybe it is at 154. They didn't want to push that hard obviously and risk losing the fight. But we'll never know because they agreed to compromise on the weight. Don't pretend it was Mayweather, when Canelo's team put the offer on the table. That is the fault of Canelo's team for putting their fighter in a disadvantageous position if the weight was going to be an issue.

"No way, that fight would have happened at 154!" -- (Speculation)

Reality: Terms were being "negotiated" and Canelo's team offered up the 152 weight clause. Not Mayweather. Perhaps with more patience and public pressure, Mayweather's team would have accepted 154 pounds. But we'll never know. As I said, it's all speculation. What is not speculation, is who offered the 152 pound clause.

And we see all sorts of people trying to say that "Canelo wanted 150" around here... its silly. But hearing Ward's comments on how bad Canelo looked at weigh in is why I did not buy that fight, nor do I give Floyd any credit for it.

Making people drain makes for bad , uninteresting fights.

I quit. Keep believing whatever you want. It is what it is. That ***** won a 154lbs belt against Cotto two fights prior fighting Canelo. Canelo was the champ at 154 weight but cannot fight him at that same weight. Makes no sense to me.

These catchweights situations are totally stupid and should be illegal. Belts....belts are a big problem too with all these organizations. Boxing is sick and Floyd sure doesn't help IMO. Floyd is a superb boxer that knows his limits. From that point, he knows how to make the right matchup for him.

I agree that no titles should ever be allowed to be gained at catchweights. :deal

I'm just saying Canelo's team was foolish for putting that 152 pound offer on the table so willingly. I think they could have played hard ball and got the deal done at 154. There was a lot of pressure on Mayweather to make that fight: from the Public, from Showtime, from his own accountant I'm sure who knew it'd be a monumental pay day. Canelo's team got "out negotiated" at the table by a superior management team who has more experience, no doubt in my mind.

I have no problem with 2 champions from 2 separate division "meeting in the middle" to give the fans a good fight. However, it should not be for a title.

And the reason why is simple: You are essentially creating another weight class, when there are already plenty of weight classes. Why don't we just create weight divisions for every 2-3 pounds? Then we'd have a bunch of 10+ weight champions!!! :nut

Because it makes for bad, uninteresting fights. Its not good for the fans or the sport. The only person its good for, is the side that gets to have the other guy drained.

The power of the A-side in negotiations may be a de facto reality in boxing, but that does not mean its a net positive. It just is what it is, and we should all hope for better.

But you're not creating another weight class. For a WW fight for example, as long as neither guy exceeds the 147 lb. limit, then it can be sanctioned as a WW fight.

You are creating another weight class. You're awarding a man a championship belt while imposing a limitation that should not exist on the "Champion."

If you want to take the belt from the champion, you should fight in his weight class with no restrictions. There is no 152 pound champion. Or 150 pound champion. Or 145 pound champion.

Why don't we just create belts and new division while we're at it? We can have the the Junior-Super Welterweight division of 151 pounds. LOL

How so? No matter if there is a contracted weight clause or not, there's always the risk that one or both of the combatants could have trouble making weight. If you feel making the weight would be too much of a detriment, then you shouldn't agree to it during negotiations.

There is never a shortage of excuses in boxing. In the absence of a contracted weight, one of the particiapants could easily claim that they were at too much of a weight disadvantage and that cost them the fight. There have been plenty of competitive fights that were fought at a CW, there have been plenty of mismatches that have taken place with no CW and vice versa.

You are confusing close rounds that went to Floyd with the word "dominate." Canelo got "dominated" Cotto made it a rough fight for Floyd and with a few tweaks, anything is possible in a rematch. Fighters have loss fights much more convincingly in history, and come back to win the rematch. So lets not get carried away using word like "dominated" around here.

Again, for a WW bout, the rules stipulate that neither guy can exceed that limit. So no, it's not creating another weight class. Nobody has to agree to contract requests from another party. If you're the champ and the challenger asks for a CW, you can easily decline if you feel it's unfair and go on to the next challenger. If you're the challenger and the champ asks for CW, you can decline and work your way up to being the mandatory challenger.

I didn't think my 8-4 card was generous. Generous would have been giving him that close round near the end of the fight, making it 7-5. I had it between 8-4 and 9-3.

And Mayweather can be under 160 for a 160 pound title fight. He can weigh in with clothes on. Not sure why people think he has to be 160.
