Freddie Roach expects Amir Khan to follow in the footsteps of his P4P king Manny Pacquiao. Trainer Roach says the WBA light-welterweight king from Bolton has a bright future, and has the talent to emulate the Filipino icon. Khan has rebuilt his career under the watchful gaze of Roach since suffering the only defeat of his career at the hands of Colombian Breidis Prescott. And now he's preparing for the first defence of his world title against Dimitry Salita in Newcastle on December 5. Roach said: "It was just fundamental mistakes he was making and the corrections were pretty simple. He learns very fast." The likeness between Pacquiao and Khan is obvious, as Roach explained. "Him and Manny Pacquiao are very similar - they both have good power and they both have good speed. And when you have speed and power it's devastating at times. "I see Amir following Manny's path of course because they train together, when they spar together It's unbelievable, it's competitive. Amir's right there with Manny every step of the way and I think his future is pretty endless right know." Khan himself was in awe of Pacquiao's destruction of Miguel Cotto at the weekend, but says the experts predicting he'll fight Manny in the future will be disappointed. He said: "Me and Manny train together, we have the same trainer and everything. I totally respect him and what a great performance he produced at the weekend. "He was amazing, I was there to watch the fight and it inspires you. When you see a great champion do that and think about the fact I was training with the guy for five weeks, to pick up even a little bit of experience from that is going to help me in my career. "But as for fighting him in the future, I can't really see that happening because I'm sure by the time I get to that level he will probably be calling it a day. "We train in the same camp and I've got too much respect for Manny to fight him." http://www.espnstar.com/other-sports/news/detail/item354823/Roach:-Amir-to-follow-Manny-path/
Well if Amir's chin holds up we may be looking at a new chin improving hormone. In which case Rico will be sadly disapointed.
Khan's a good fighter and he's technically better at this stage of his career than Manny was at the same stage. But he doesn't have that natural everything that Manny was born with. The power, the speed the athleticism.
Maybe Khan's chin will improve by going up to light welter? Pacman was knocked down by a jab from Nedal Hussein!
i believe the mistake roach is talking about is letting Khan fight good opponents. Wont make that mistake again.
Pac was knocked out and dropped in his early pro years then gained weight and solid muscles and developed a very good chin. Khan can definitely improve punch resistence. Maybe he'll never be able to take flush bombs, but maybe it won't be necessary, he'd becoming defensively very very sound.
Khan has speed and stamina but apart from the chin, I don't think he's got much power either, definitely not the kind of one-punch power that Pacman brings to the ring.
I don't think Khan will shock the world in the way Manny has. I see his career being akin to Hatton's, becoming a big name, winning a couple of world championships whilst making millions doing so. But I don't think he'll reach that 'great' status, simply because he's not been blessed with the physical attributes than Manny has. His technical ability and skill is far better than what Manny's was at that stage, but as we've found out now, Manny's capacity to develop was through the roof! Although he's lightning quick and has a bit of pop in his punches, Khan seems to be abit too brittle at times, and you're constantly worrying whether he'll still be standing after the next shot. But like others have said, his chin may improve the further up he goes. So I guess time will tell
