Think of it in terms of "Friends don't let friends drive drunk!". Maybe he is truly trying to keep Hopkins out of the ring for his own sake and saying he won't train him may get Bhop's attention.

 

Roach just might be putting some fire under Hopkins by saying he thinks he should retire and that he is scared for him.
And you mofo's better not flame what I just said because when Hopkins was training for Calzaghe I mentioned that I thought Hopkins was practicing lowering his head right at the precise moment that Calslappy punches so that he would injure his hands. Folks said I had seen to many movies, then a week later, Roach mentions that's one technique they were working on.
All this is, is Roach's attempt at reverse psychology, on Hopkins, and possibly even more so on Pavlik.

Of course there are signs that BHOP is deteriorating. As said, he was always stronger in the second half of the fight. Against Joe, he slowed markedly. You could see that he was walking to the wrong corner, as Roach said. These are little signs. At his advanced age
