Please, for the people saying Roach is his friend, get real. They are not friends. Hopkins only fought with Roach once. They are acquintances, not friends.
Disagree. If I really have a close friend, and I'm noticing something about him that I'm not liking wrt his health. I do what I can do to make sure he doesn't step in the ring. I've lost enough friends because of dumb things. Wouldn't want to lose anymore.
Yup you say that stuff in private, man to man, not to the press. People just don't have any honour anymore. If he wanted to be really honest he would admit that a Pac/DLH fight is just a money spinning farce.
I'm personally more concerned for Pac's health. How can Roach let him jump up to 147? Very irresponsible.:-(
I will admit though that Roach seems to have some agenda when i listen to him talk about Pacman fighting DLH. He talks as if Pacman really has a good chance to win. Is he looking for that big pay day? Do trainers get more money if the purse is bigger?
I do not know why Roach did disclose his thoughts to the press. He did also espressed concerns about Toney after the second Peter fight, I think that is at least part of the reason why Toney selected Suluki for his fight in July.
If roach cared so much about his friends, he wouldn't let Pacman get in the ring at 147 against a Jr. MW.
Classy in that he's willing to risk offending his friend if it keeps him from risking further damage to his brain. And, passing up a huge payday himself to train him. I read it as a classy statement, but others may see it differently.
Probably. To be honest I'm taking all of this with a pinch of salt. I have faith that Hopkins will know when to call it a day.
He's already told him, but Bernard took no notice. I do understand where you coming from about making it public though... perhaps he shouldn't. From the artical... " Roach has told Hopkins how he feels and has said he will not train him for a fight he doesn’t believe he should take at this stage of his life but like so many fighters before him, the former middleweight and light heavyweight title holder is deaf to such a discussion. His long-time co-trainer, Nazim Richardson, said in the wee hours of the morning after the Calzaghe defeat that he had not counseled Hopkins to retire but had told him, “There’s only one thing in boxing you haven’t experienced and that’s a beating.’’ From Freddie Roach... “We don’t listen to our peers. I didn’t listen to Eddie. Bernard won’t listen either I’m afraid. Bernard doesn’t want to hear it but my concern is those four times that night he went to the wrong corner. I know he had some problems with a hyperactive thyroid that the doctor told me he had to take care of that. Maybe that had something to do with it. But this is just not a good fight for Bernard. “Is Pavlik in any danger in this fight? No. People say if Bernard can lull him into a slow pace he can out box him but that’s not going to happen. Pavlik’s not like that. “Bernard is crafty enough to box him but not the way he looked his last two fights. Kelly Pavlik is an up and coming guy. He’s strong. He’s busy. He’s aggressive. He backs people up so well. I picked (Edison) Miranda to beat him but Pavlik was too strong for him. He backed up that animal with ease. If he puts that pressure on Bernard…’’ Freddie Roach chose not to finish that sentence." This content is protected
I kinda disagree. He isn't punch drunk yet, but stamina wise Hopkins is long gone. He faked a couple low blows that fight to get a huge rest, and he fights in spurts and can only throw several well placed shots a round and then he complains acting like hes won a fight that he clearly lost... I like hopkins but He needs to stop fighting. How he is going to counter a guy like Pavlik that throws like 800-900punches a fight and is a hardcore power puncher? Calzaghe slaps, but Pavlik doesn't. He can't keep his pace up against a guy like Pavlik without getting hurt. I admire that Hopkins is gonna go try beat the guy who beat the guy who beat him twice but I just think this is crazy. And Roach isn't condeming him, he is concerned for Hopkins health there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. The fact that he is throwing it into the press is proof that he is honestly concerned as he wants this situation to be brought into the public to make Hopkins think the fight over more. Hopkins will never quit unless he gets ktfo, because after every decision lost he gets he claims he won when he really didn't.
