Good point. Hopkins spent a long time fighting for relative peanuts, even after he won the IBF championship. From what I have heard he is quite frugal. He probably has more than enough money, but I can see him wanting more, particularly when he is not taking significant punishment in the ring.

Yup Hopkins defended his IBF belt for what he described as "chump change" on ESPN. He refused to sell his soul so King kept him shut out & away from his two champions. It soon became apparent that Bernard was the worlds best middleweight though, so King put on the tournament confident Tito would deal with him. The rest, as they say, is history.

you think, I dont think thats hit motive at all. Well mayb it could b, but I just think its wrong on his part. And my next question is, if Freddy is such a renowned great trainer, this should b the opportunity of a life time for him. B-Hop is a sig, underdog, he can prove his boxing genius in training bernard to beat Pavlik. He shouldnt b shunning away from this, he should b happy that all the chips are stacked in the opponent favor, and he can have a part in training bernard to prove the world wrong. He says that bhop should stop fighting, BUT bhop can make it a slow fight and fight his fight. So if theres a chance bhop can win, he should jump at the opportunity to train him. I just dont get the reasoning

Roach always says this **** about his fighters. If anything, he is a very open and honest person. He was talking this way about Mike when he was training Mike for his comeback.

He doesn't hold back, and considering he attributes his Parkinson's to boxing, do you blame him?

I don't think it's a good fight for Hopkins either, and this is especially true after I read this month's issue of the ring where it seemed like Pavlik was on a mission to prove that he can fight and he's not just a one-dimensional fighter.

Furthermore, apparently when people criticize white fighters in particular, it gets under his skin because he mentioned it in the article.

Look for Kelly to go into this fight with a grudge and to do everything he can to pound Hopkins into submission.

I intitially thought that this was going to be a fight that ends in a decision, but now I think it's going to end in a KO. Hopkins is going to have to really dig in and fight this guy, and at 44 years old, I don't know if he has enough in him, and this is especially true since Kelly has one hell of a heart and a damn good punch.

Why do you love B-Hop so much? He would have made you wash his underwear if you were in prison with him.

no need for joke coach roach to be worried, B-HOP knows what he is doing. He wants a fight with RJJ and beating pavlik will give him that shot. i expect RJJ to give calzaghe a boxing lesson.

    B-HOP vs RJJ - early 09 - hopkins UD

I remember watching Hopkins/Echols 1 on Fox Sports Net on basic cable and realizing that in terms of the fighters involved it was easily an HBO worthy card. After Hops got ripped off early in his career by his promoter, he was very wary of others and very outspoken about the evils of boxing. He was basically locked out of the limelight until King figured he had gotten too old and that Felix would knock him out. Like you said, the rest is history. :yep

YES M8, he held his own.

But a Hopkins who had all his physicall abilities intact would have blown ordinary Joe away.

    Freddy knows this.

He was lucky Calzaghe is as average as he is.

Bernard should have either retired after the Calzaghe fight or had a farewell bout in Philly. Trouble is, if a deathbed promise to his mother isn't enough to keep him out of the ring, a severe beatdown might be the only thing to force his hand. I'm not sure Pavlik is the man to administer it, but at his age it's just a matter of time.

I hate watching old, great athletes who can't move on. Bernard now firmly fits that category, even though his situation is pretty damned unique.

Roach also said after the first Vasquez-Marquez fight that he wouldn't train Izzy because he felt he was already slurring his words and that he should retire. Vasquez then stopped Marquez and beat him by decision without Roach.
