This is incorrect especially the WAY lower part. Juan only averaged 36 punches per round in the 3rd fight. That's even less than what Floyd throws. A huge misconception many boxing fans have is that Juan punching a lot gives him success against emmanuel, which he doesn't. The truth of the matter is that Juan has always been effective at controlling emmanuel's punch output all the way from the first fight down to the third fight. Floyd is just as good or even better than Juan at controlling his victim's volume
He does this by punching with Manny though. Floyd never does this, and if he covers/blocks while doing it Pac will keep throwing. Mayweather did throw a lot vs Cotto but was clearly getting tired as well. Not like it matters anymore though, both fighters are slipping where Manny is losing it even faster which makes sense considering his style. I lost the interest to see this fight ages ago. The only thing that irks me is the because JMM does it Mayweather will do it better when their style of counter punching is very different. Not saying Mayweather would not dominate but it wont be because JMM did it.
Manny is most successful when his opponents exchange with him and have lessor handspeed. In fights 1 and 2 this is solely the reason why Manny got the first 2 decisions since Marquez would get KD while exchanging with Pac. Clottey if he would've thrown more punches wouldve whooped Manny's ass and all he did was block and throw twenty punches but with all 20 landing. I'm going to have to disagree with your opinion sir. There's a reason why Manny is only use to one element of opponent and thats brawlers. I always felt the best way to deal with Pac is to let his off-balanced ass lunge in, let him throw his same flurry then catch him as he regains his balance. Exchanging with Pac, playing the game of Rockem Sockem aka Chin is playing right into the hypejobs gameplan.
Probably because he knows JMM's adapting abilities vs Pac's. JMM will adjust to Pacquiao in the fight, in the middle of a round. Roach has to come up with the perfect gameplan BEFORE the fight, and that will only work for so long against someone who will adjust like JMM.
Two different styles. This is far too simplistic. My man Bogotazo broke it down better than anybody. I suggest you take a look at his thread.
I don't think that had anything to do with it. The fact that he's getting older certainly does not help because stamina does tend to decline as you get older. I believe Cotto was forcing him to up his workrate in order to both win rounds and keep Cotto off of him. Of course, in the end it was Cotto that faded, as he typically does, and Mayweather that got stronger, as he typically does. The worst showing I've seen Mayweather in recently was against Ortiz. I don't know if I've ever seen Mayweather miss that much in a fight before. He was fighting at a dangerous pace. Too bad that fight ended the way it did because if seemed like Ortiz was beggining to time Mayweather, and use his strength and size to his advantage, and Mayweather was expending too much energy. Against Cotto, he was in a tough fight, but that's because Cotto is a high calibur opponent.
