This is not supposed to be a hate thread (at least form my side you can do whatever you want with it) but it's been a while now and that still comes to my mind. Roach may be a legendary coach, etc. but when the fight is going wrong he is quite useless. Just from the top of my head Pacquiao vs Clottey- 12 rounds and he couldn't help Pacman to get over this guard. Peterson style of going all body, headfirst on Khan was problematic for Amir still Roach never had a clue on how to set him. And those are 2 very talented guys so it shouldn't be a problem to improve their strategy during fight. Look that I'm not mentioning Chavez jr's problem for I consider him quite limited. Also I'm not mentioning times where his guys had problems with excellent boxers like Floyd or Marquez cause when 2 good fighters are fighting it's not that simple. But in other cases it is this pattern: when his fighter is better and has no problems then it's ok (so he prepares them well for bouts), but if anything goes wrong/unexpected then you end up seeing his guys making same mistakes all night long and not changing anything. Your opinions?
I see your angle but disagree completely. Roach is proven. Saying he's "not" that good based on recent losses from his stable doesn't erase the legacy he's carved out in this sport. Every great trainer has fighters who have lost and it's to be expected as anything can and will happen in boxing.
WTF are you talking about? the home town ref steals two from Kahn, who I could care less about but lets be honest he got robbed and somehow its Roach's fault
Being a great trainer doesn't mean you're a magical genie. Everyone pretty much knows Roach is a great trainer. It doesn't mean he can force fighters into being smarter. He tells them what he can and if they can't execute the it's no different than any other trainer.
I'm not basing that on loses but on his inability to help his fighters during the fight. Mind also that I'm not saying he's not good, probably one of the best right now. I just don't think he turns to gold everything he touches as many people would like to see him. It's quite annoying to see good boxers apply wrong tactic all fight and not changing. It's frustrating to watch;P I just sit and shout "don't do this"
lol. Where did I wrote sth like that? read my post again and come back with something with more sense
Roach is the best trainer in the game and the most technically astute. the way Khan fights is ingrained in him. he won't be learning any new things. Roach can't help that. he's smoothed him out and taught him a few basic things like ending combinations with the left etc. but he's hit the ceiling.
It's Hilarious that people are trippin' because Roach can't teach his fighters, technical ability, movement and defense. Uh, have any of you seen Freddie Roach fight. It's like expecting Shaq to be a great free throw coach.:-(
Roach had the right gameplan for Khan - avoid standing in the pocket, keep moving, keep boxing. But Khan apparently feels he has something to prove by reverting to slugging it out at times. Roach has moved him from contender to champion status and will bring him back up there again.
I like this metaphor, sir:good but I wasn't talking about technique, movement or defense but about tactics. I know you can't make your fighter do want you want and even with golden tips if he just doesn't listen then there is nothing you can do. But his fighters seem to care about what he tells them and sometimes he just doesn't have much to tell them. I consider strategy to be very important in boxing and that's one of the reasons why I made this thread
