Roach: Malignaggi first then Maidana next..

i personally prefer khan to fight Paulie then Maidana...what Roach says makes sense and i think will be good for boxing fans to watch too.

I just don't see why Roach's approach requires Amir to join GBP / leave Frank Warren.

 

Isn't it obvious? How many fights in Vegas has Warren put on? How many HBO PPV events has he put on? That's why. Khan's said as much himself and thanked Warren today for what he did for his career after Prescott. It's not like he's said 'Warren's been **** for me and I couldn't wait to get away from him'. If Khan wants to make it big in America like he's repeatedly said, then I think he's made the best move for that to happen.

 

C'mon man. I take your point that Warren is much more UK focussed but my understanding was that he's co-promoted shows in Vegas before for Hamed and even Barrerra (i remember it being mentioned on tv ages ago)...?

I just don't see why being a success and being signed with warren are mutually exclusive - surely a boxer can achieve both?? In past interviews following the launch of khan promotions, Warren seemed happy to make the fights Khan was talking about in america. :-/

 

I see your point, but I still think it's the right move to make him as big as possible. You are correct that Warren has co-promoted shows in the States, but he doesn't have the sheer influence that a company like GBP has over there. I very much doubt that Warren could have turned Khan into a PPV attraction in America either and GBP have a proven track-record in that area. There is also the possibility that GBP may have offered more money and maybe Khan also wanted a change. Like I said, he has actually thanked Warren for the input into his career as well so he must appreciate it. At the end of the day, we're just speculating, but I personally think it's a good move if he wants to be big in America; after all, he is based there now as well.

 

I don't think Khan will ever be a big PPV star in the States. Even with Golden Boy

 

I cant believe nobody ever saw this coming from the outset.

I mean surely i wasnt the only one who thought "Team Khan" was going to drop Warren the minute they made contacts in the US.

 

I'm not saying he will either, but I am saying that he's definately put himself in the best position promotion-wise for that to happen and to make himself a 'name' in the States. As I said before, though, for all we know it might have just come down to something as simple as wanting a change or money. Didn't HBO want to sign him a few months ago as well? This is the latest from that end today:

'HBO, which televised one of Khan's early bouts on a Joe Calzaghe undercard, is interested in televising his bouts regularly. Since HBO also has an output deal with Golden Boy, it's almost a certainty that Khan's fights will air on HBO in the United States while continuing to be on pay-per-view in the United Kingdom.'

It goes without saying that Khan would never be a HBO PPV star in a few fights, but HBO's intention to show his bouts surely indicates that they are interested in him long-term. You never know where Khan's career might go.

 

What makes you think GBP will make him a name in the States? How many fighters do they have that are mainstream stars? They couldn't even make Mosely a PPV attraction even though he beat DLH twice and has a fan-friendly style. Bernard Hopkins isn't a big PPV star as well.

To be honest, Golden Boy's track record when it comes to young fighters is ****. They haven't developed one young fighter into a mainstream attraction. They rely on signing on promoters top fighters by enticing them with HBO dates and big purses but don't guide them to superstardom.

Who have they bought up and made a big attraction out of? The likes of JMM, Mosely, Hopkins, Vazquez and Casamayor were all developed by other promoters.

Tbh, if Khan went for money then I don't blame him, this is a dangerous sport and you can't keep taking punches to the head forever but will he 'make it' in America? That I doubt.

 

I dont think Khan has the charisma or likeability to pass off being a major attraction in the good ol' US of A.

He is devoid of charisma and could be classed as a charmless man, who people either like or loathe.

 

Add to that the fact that he's of a religion which is currently hated by around 50% of the US population (and it's probably the 50% where most boxing fans exist in) :yep

 

He doesnt come across like that to me .. He always comes across as a thoroughly decent guy with serious talent .. Who would you class as a fighter with charisma ?? Joe Calzaghe ??

Khan's boxing skills will be loved in America were they are totally devoid of any talent .. You sound like your a Khan hater, i can see Khan doing some numbers in the states with the right opponents. Malignaggi in the Garden is the right move, Maidana has a dig but hes been beaten by Kotelnik and if a guy is beaten by a guy so wooden and 1 dimensional as Kotelnik then i can see Khan controlling him .. But styles make fights so you never know, i'd like to see Khan take on Bradley somewere down the line, i think Bradley is a serious challenge ..

 

I hope khan keeps his belt and sticks to his guns.
