"I've trained both guys. I was 8 weeks with Oscar, we worked the mitts, we had two good days. Pacquiao, I have good day everyday. He's younger, fresher, faster, hits harder. Everyone says this guy is bigger and stronger - Manny hits harder, without a doubt." - Freddie Roach, December 2008

Hard to believe that Pac hits harder. But then again it's hard to believe anything that comes out of Freddie's mouth.

I think he's faster but Roach is either fooling himself or hyping the fight.

He probably has more "pop", because he is more explosive. But I'd imagine Oscar would have more power.

  6. Hmmmmm am I the only person who is feeling Roach is fast becoming more promoter than coach? This is the same man who swore Hopkins was too old to fight Pavlik, who would get hurt fighting Pavlik who was befuddled during the JC fight and went to the wrong corner thus proving him past it when the reality was he was simply concentrating 100% on the fight in front of him and nothing else?

Why should we believe Roach now when recent history tells us that he lies and/or cannot correctly analyze what's in front of him?

Of course Roach is going to say this. his job is to coach his fighter to win. Whether this is in the gym or building his fighter's confidence it doesn't matter - he has to do everything he can to ensure his fighter wins.
I don't think i have ever seen or heard the coach of one team say "yeah, i have trained both teams, but my old team is much better."

Roach has been surprisingly candid the last few days leading up to this fight. I believe he's giving away genuine insights and elements of their gameplan. Why? Because he's second guessing himself like crazy at this point, and he's effectively making disclaimers at this point, before the fight, so industry people can bear him some consideration in understanding why he chose to go through with this. Personally, I've been farily impressed by some of his thought process. Much more than I was before I got a chance to hear what he had to say. This is real stuff in my view. Again, these are disclaimers, nothing else.

Yeah, like Pacquiao would leave Vargas sprawled on the canvas with a single left hook.

What if he's right? Is it physically impossible for a man to carry his power up in weight? It's not guaranteed, but...
