From over at b o x i n g s c e n e. ------------- By Chris LaBate Trainer Freddie Roach is making small changes to the fighting style of WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao. Roach is already training Pacquiao in the Philippines, as they get ready for the scheduled trilogy fight with IBF/WBA lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez. Roach is a little concerned with Marquez's jab and wants Pacquiao to understand just how crafty Marquez can be with that particular punch. "I will have to make a very small adjustment in his style of fighting," Roach told PhilBoxing.com. "That's a wrong notion [that Marquez doesn't have a good jab]. I told [Pacquiao] that was wrong and what he was doing was wrong. I had to change his style a little and we will continue to change it this week. I had to tell him Marquez is a good jabber. He is one of the best jabbers in boxing today."
One of Pacquiao's main problems against Marquez was when he lunges is, all Marquez has to do is stick his jab out there and Manny walks right into it. It was very significant in beaking manny's rhythm. I wonder if Roach will teach Manny to hold back a little bit or circle away from the jab.
Well if Pacquiao struggles with a old, bloated Marquez then the Mayweather fight loses significant luster. So from that standpoint its interesting. Pacquiao should blow Marquez out. But if he doesnt, right handed counter punchers really are Pac's bane.
If Manny is disciplined enough to Box Marquez he will beat him easily, I'm not sure if he can stick to that gameplan, for a full 12 rounds
I'm not expecting a blow-out at all, regardless of weight and age. Marquez has given Pac two nightmares in the past...I wouldn't be surprised if he gave him another one.
Nah, bruv. You don't understand. You need to be a 'young, hungry lion' to be regarded as a viable opponent. Experience, skill, style and proven world-class credentials, aren't important.
yep I agree. It's just unfortunate that Floyd couldn't get much lower in weight. Pacquiao has to eat 7,000 calories a day in order to come in the weigh in at 144 pounds. I don't feel like turning this thread into that discussion though, so I'll leave it at that
Styles make matchup's, and Marquez already dominated him twice, and has the mental edge over Manny, and considering all the punishment Pac has taken from bigger fighters, how do we know he aint past his best days, **** he looked horrible against a 40 year old Mosley You never know whats gonna happen until these 2 step in the ring, but one thing I know for sure is that both has to win by KO, if Manny struggles the Mayweather match will lose all of it's luster, and Marquez has no chance of winning this fight on the cards.
The general forum is quite a funny place. Sometimes I wish some of those guys would actually think about the situation themselves, rather than reciting lines from Floyd's mouth or general promotional material. A lot of them even quote him word for word, with profound statements like 'take the test!!'. Even when I disagree with someone's opinion, I still respect them if they show that they've actually put genuine thought into what they're saying, but when it comes to the people who just mindlessly parrot stuff...it's sad.
I'm actually curious as to what Marquez' gameplan would be and if he will use any tactical info from the fights between their 2nd bout and now as new blueprints.
Yeah when Marquez fights Floyd its a cherry pick. When he fights Pacquiao its a viable opponent. It just shows the differences in skill level people view in Mayweather and Pacquiao.
It's one thing dealing with people like that on a forum, but try it in person on a regular basis. I have a couple of friends that I have to put up with. It's frustrating. It really is.
