Of course, but would a legit champ put his body at discomfort just to gain a small edge over a complete non factor in his own division? I'd prefer to give Cotto more credit, and think he has no issues making 150.

Pac's cw against Cotto was his first legit fight in the division, we know DLH was not it. He'd barely taken any punches since he'd left 130, not that long ago. Once he'd settled into welter, he didn't ask any welters to drop a few lbs.

Cotto probably didn't need to, but given what he thought transpired between them the first time and the fact that Margarito had precisely zero leverage, I can't say a demand designed purely to maximize the discomfort of his opponent is entirely surprising in this case.

Why can't we just as easily apply this logic to Cotto and say he has grown into the division further with the Margarito and Mayweather fights, especially since in the latter he did come in at the full 154 and attempted to use his size?

So do you think Cotto would have been drained or uncomfortable at 150 if Marg had accepted his proposal?

Cotto wasn't moving up, he was already a champ at 154. Super champ in fact, rated #1 by the Ring. Champs never ask to defend at a cw, it's an admission of being a blown up/paper champ. I understand there was a history between these 2, but Marg was already coming with that eye handicap, off a vicious beatdown, wasn't ranked top 20 probably, How sweet could that revenge have been if he had to put that sorry bum at an additional disadvantage?

Could have been slightly uncomfortable, but the significantly greater discomfort it caused Margarito would have more than justified it.
I don't really agree that demanding catchweights for a division in which one holds a belt is necessarily an admission of being a paper champion, and indeed, in a case such as this with such an ugly history, that's far from the first conclusion I'd reach. I mean I never thought he was the best at 154 and a win at 150 wouldn't be that impressive, but neither would a win at 153 or the full 154. I simply don't think things like "quality of win" entered into the equation at all in this instance, nor do I think "fairness of fight" played a part in how sweet the revenge would be in his estimation. It was simply a matter of Cotto taking every contractual advantage he possibly could against a guy who had no leverage and who he felt had a significant illegal advantage the first time around.

I doubt there'd be any discomfort, given that Cotto requested a 160 rehydration clause. That tells me he'd make 147 easy, with minor discomfort maybe.

If the point was not to prove who the best man was on fair terms (minus the eye that Cotto could do nothing about), but just to go sadist on this wreck, then he should have requested 16oz gloves for Marg only, or just hired some goons to beat up on Marg in an alley and put it on youtube.

Haha too ****ing bad Roach. Cotto is not gonna be forced into another catchweight like before. Him fighting Trout in December at 154 was him telling you and your boyfriend Arum to shove that catchweight up your asses. Good for you Cotto.

He is not a 140lber, and he has not been a 140lber since 2009.

That's like saying Cotto is still a WW, or Haye is still a Cruiserweight, etc, etc. Can he make 140lbs? Most probably, has he in the last 3 years? No. So he is not a 140lber.

    Cotto is a small LMW.
    Haye is a small HW.
    Pacquiao is a small WW.

This does not mean they can still be labeled as a boxer in the division below, otherwise why not just carry their achievements from the higher weight and rank them in the division below, even though they haven't weighed in at that weight in a number of years.
