I think Roach really wants to train Joshua. He's said as much before. Very similar tactics to when he was fairly outspoken after Fury vs Wilder and people suspected he wanted to muscle in on the training setup there.
He may well have bet on Ruiz because of the odds but let's give his current POV some context This content is protected
Ruiz wouldn't like that. It's not like Roach is on a roll lately with his predictions. He's no Teddy, but he's been a lot more wrong as right in the last couple of years.
I give it 40-50% Joshua's career ends the night of the rematch but lets not pretend Roach is a prophet here. He's wrong more than half of the time. Example - Haye will KO Wladimir
Roach was 100% correct about everything he said. Joshua could definitely beat Ruiz in a rematch if he doesn’t come in heavy and focuses on winning and not forcing the knockout against a durable opponent. That was a sign of Joshua’s inexperience. Even Kevin Barry and Joseph Parker going into Parker’s fight with Ruiz both admitted that Ruiz was very durable and that Joseph was going to need a lot of movement to out hustle Ruiz for the decision, which he did. To this day I think the referee in the Takam fight did Joshua a disservice in stopping the fight as early as he did, since Takam most likely would’ve went the distance and it would’ve taught Joshua that there are always fringe contenders and journeymen out there that can take your power and take you to the cards. Fury learned this lesson with Zack Page, since Fury loaded up and hit Page with everything and wanted to stop Page, but Page absorbed everything and Fury even started eating counters and was told by Steward not to force the knockout. Even Wilder going into the first Stiverne fight one of Wilder’s trainers Russ Anber, who has since had a falling out with Wilder did most of Wilder’s matchmaking up to the title and warned Wilder that Stiverne would most likely go the distance and not to force the knockout. Wilder tried forcing the knockout anyway, but had to change strategies and just get the win.
