I agree with most who said Toney is a true inborn fighter, he is one guy who is so relaxed in the ring.

Toney was out boxed by Sam Peter. Yes, Sam Peter who has ZERO skill to speak of out boxed James Toney.

But yes, when Toney was half way dedicated he was a very sharp fighter.

I don't know. Image? It's true tho, Toney is a bad mother****er inside the ring and at press-conferences, weigh-ins and interviews, but at the same time you will not find a fighter who's nicer to his fans. In his free-time he cares a lot for sick and disabled kids, especially autists, does charity work for them and he takes also care of young amateur kids, visiting them in the gym etc... There is no doubt Toney is a hard man, he's one of the toughest men to ever step inside the ring, but that's only one side of him. He's hot-tempered but good-natured, and it shows outside the boxing circus. Basically if you're cool with him he'll be the coolest person around, but if you're being an ass he'll put you right back in place (verbally).

I wrote Toney had the potential to become a top5 ATG if he had the discipline and work-ethic of someone like B-Hop, Roy Jones or Pac. That ain't no joke. I didn't say he was a top5 ATG. Read my posts correctly before replying..

TOP 5 is pushing it a little bit. But definitely TOP 10.

Unlike Jones and Hopkins, Toney never lived up to his full potential.
A dedicated would have also become lightheavyweight and heavyweight champ. Also, some of his losses would never had happened.

To me...Boxing skills is the same as boxing talent.

If you think James Toney is more talented than Roy Jones, then I don't know what to say.

I don't think that Roach's statement is that surprising. Toney is easily one the most gifted fighter of the past 25 years. Talentwise he clearly ranks above Pac or Dlh. What does surpise me is that Roach doesn't take his share of responsibility for Toney's bad conditioning. A prouder, less money oriented trainer would simply have left Toney at some point.

You made a very good point there. I never thought about it before. Roach just didn't have enough authority over Toney, they were more like buddies. In the end, Roach was reluctant to train Toney anymore after all these setbacks. Bill Miller was criticizing him for not taking training serious enough and that led to the split. Eddie Mustapha was another hardcore trainer that couldn't control Toney. After becoming champ, Toney never really needed a trainer to teach him boxing, he just needed someone with authority enough to keep him in the gym and train. Roach wasn't the right man. Hopefully his new trainer Shadeed Suluki can do it, an old-school fighter needs an old-school trainer.

If Toney would have stayed at cruiserweight after he dethroned Jirov, no doubt in my mind Toney would still rule that division with an iron fist. Toney would be undefeated as a cruiser and quite possibly go down as the best cruiserweight ever.

Toney's skill does tend to get overrated a bit though due to the novelty value of his defensive style.

We all know Roach has the hots for Toney. This is nothing new and doesn change the fact that Toney is an overrated mediocre fighter, with an over average mouth.
