......Bernard came in light, but he also gained significantly more weight in the hrs leading to the fight, where DLH likely did'nt gain much........ We'll never no for sure because neither fighter unofficially weighed in fightnight. Big difference between both situations however...... Hopkins was a career middleweight who often times came in under the limit anyway....... He was 156 lbs for DLH, only 4 lbs off from the limit. Interesting to note that Hopkins weighed 157 lbs for Trinidad in a situation where there was'nt a catchweight stipulated in the contract. DLH in the situation with Pacquiao, had'nt made 147 lbs in 8 years......and all of a sudden he's going to come in light at 145 lbs against a much faster fighter???:huh ........that just does'nt make any sense at all. Anyone with a brain could tell you that the best case scenario would have been for DLH to make 147 lbs on the nose, and then gained at least 10 lbs overnight walking up those ringsteps...... ......if DLH deliberately walked up the ringsteps light at 147 lbs, was he actually thinking that he was going to fight speed with speed? An old fighter like DLH in an attempt to beat Pacquiao with speed???atsch
Here's the thing......NOT JUST ANYONE WITH A BRAIN has the clout to go to a professional prize fighter like DLH and tell him what weight he should come in at in a huge fight like DLH vs PAC. No......There are highly trained, certified and licened individuals hired by these professional athletes to organize, implement and execute a strategy....gameplan if you will on how to get a guy like DLH in prime condition. They do so in the most scientific and tactical manner....from their training drills, diet, supplements, to their sleeping routines. DLH's trainer said he came into the fight fit and ready.....he had a great camp and the reason for the loss was not b/c of a miscalculation in training camp, DLH being shot or dehytrated but b/c of Manny's speed. DLH was not that much slower than Floyd just a year earlier when he faught mayweather to a close split decision loss. So most underestimated PAC's speed until they got up close and personal with him inside the ring....by that time it's too late....plus Manny having to move up 2 weight classes and no one knowing how he weight would affect his power, speed, reflexes and explosiveness....they were banking that DLH would bigger, stronger, and possibly able to match PAC's speed. They already felt that DLH would be able to beat PAC on skill and from a technical standpoint.
We're just going to have to disagree on this matter Charlie.......you can spin it however way you want it.....but the bottom line is that you're in the minority. .......I have'nt heard any boxing columnist side with the opinion that is was a good idea for DLH to come into the DLH fight light as can be...... You seem to be of the opinion that DLH walking into the ring at 147 lbs was a good idea and was planned by DLH. If it was planned, it was as stupid and idiotic as Mike Tyson weighing 233 lbs to fight Lennox Lewis, when anyone that knows just an ounce of boxing knew that Tyson had to be quick and fast to get inside Lewis' reach. There was a few jokers in boxing forums like this who noted the day of the weighin that Tyson needed the mass to hold off Lewis.......but everyone I respected in forums like this noted......"any chance that Tyson had of catching and taking out Lewis early, just went out the window when Tyson tipped the scales at 233 lbs..... .....the same logic held for DLH......he was'nt going to beat Pacquiao by outspeeding him....... Everyone that picked DLH to win, noted that DLH would do so by using his height, reach, and mass...... .......mass went out the window when DLH tipped the scales at 145 lbs and walked up the ringsteps at 147 lbs, while Pacquiao was weighing 148 lbs!:deal Newsflash.......old fighters dont all of a sudden find themselves by going down to a weight they have'nt been for years...... Alot of fighters, one of which comes to mind looked terrible when he had been fighting at 160 lbs or heavier for several fights, and then wanted to come down to 154 lbs and fight Terry Norris..... His name was Ray Leonard, and he like DLH looked horrendous coming down in weight, both losing every round of the fight. Old fighters dont do well coming down to weights that was in there distant past. Now you're saying Charlie that DLH planned it that way........and I'm saying that if he did, it was the most stupid and nonsensical thing a fighter his age could have done. .......I mean just name me a few aged fighters who have been succesful in coming down in weight????? I'll name you a few in recent times that looked horrendous......Roy Jones Jr vs Tarver...... Tarver vs Hopkins, (and Tarver had only gone up in weight to be in a movie)..... .......and how about poor Chris Byrd getting KTFO by a journeyman, when he made a malinformed attempt to go from Heavyweight all the way down to lightheavyweight.:-(
