Matthew Macklin will have to cope without the world's leading trainer, Freddie Roach, in his corner when he contests the British, European and Commonwealth middleweight titles against holder Darren Barker at the LG Arena in Birmingham on Sept 18.

Roach, who also trains world champions Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan, said that a commitment to Pacquiao would preclude him from being in the corner on Macklin's home turf.

"I'll be in the Philippines, where we are starting the training camp for Pacquiao,'' Roach told Telegraph Sport from his training base in Los Angeles. ''He wanted me over there, and I am going there on Sept 11. It has been the plan for some time."

Pacquiao, the multiple-weight world champion, is due to fight Antonio Margarito at light-middleweight, most likely in Texas, on Nov 13.
"The fact is that I do train two world champions, and my schedule is full,'' said Roach. ''Matthew is here in Los Angeles at the moment and I am working with him, training him every day. He is having good sparring here, and I expect him to beat this guy Barker. I've watched tapes of Barker, who has fast hands, but who also drops his hands. Matthew will catch up with him, because Barker does get fatigued in fights, and he could be slowed up by body shots. I like Macklin in this fight."

I think it was Arthur vs Gomez yes.

Either way, it's a bit **** from Roach, who'll no doubt be accepting a fairly hefty cheque for his work.

Wonder who will be in his corner?

Gallagher ought to tell him to go **** himself if truth be told.

my itinerary for the night will be
1. Watch Macklin Spark Barker
2. Go boozing
3. Log on to ESB to gloat about Barker getting knocked out in spectacular fashion
4. shag some tart i picked up along the way

I noticed Roach said Macklin will catch up with him. So he obviously feels Barker will start fast and get into a lead. I agree with his brief analysis although i feel Barker can win the fight.

You do know Macklin was training with Gallagher before he headed out to LA and I believe Joe is out there now with Macklin ?

Even though Macklin has been working with Roach, Gallagher will have been there throughout almost the whole training camp for Macklin and I'm sure both Macklin and Gallagher will be delighted to be working together on September 18th.
