What boxers best fit the Road Warrior title to you? Do you enjoy this type of fighter? When I think of road warriors I usually think of hyperactive boxing careers where the fighter has more fights then is common for the day. Fighting in other fighters backyards consistently. Being underrated in general, occasional if not common robberies or close calls going against them. Often they move up in weight to prolong their careers, get better paydays, etc. Fight anyone, anywhere, anytime. Names that come to mind... Glen Johnson. Buck Smith. Rob Calloway. Jerry Halstead. Marcos Villanasa. Bobby Crabtree would travel abroad occasionally for up and coming prospects. Who else? Who are your favorites?
Jorge Castro just about fits this bill to perfection. He's had over a hundred fights been stopped just twice and has fought from Jnr Middle all the way to Cruiserweight. He's fought names like Terry Norris,Roy Jones,Roberto Duran,Vasilly Jirov,Juan Carlos Gomez and John David Jackson and he's done it on the road. Plus he's twice came back from serious accidents to continue his boxing career. A seriously tough man and a seriously underrated fighter.
He had a cycling accident in 1985 and was told he'd never be able to fight but ignored it and made his debut in 1987. He had a serious car accident in 2005 suffering a collapsed lung and broken ribs yet came back and was fighting the next year and is still going strong.
Johnny Nelson although not in the classic Road Warrior mould, did fight in a dozen countries or so. I always liked Freddy Cruz, Lenzie Morgan and Emanual Burton
When I hear the term "road warrior", I think of Brian Mitchell.......I believe there was some kind of rule for him to only defend his title on foreign soil?
Yeah, every one of his title defences took place on foreign soil, sometimes right in the other guy's home town. I think that's unprecedented in boxing history. "Bigfoot" Martin also had that "anytime, anywhere" mentality.
I believe Eddie Perkins holds the record of about 23 different counties visited, some of them several times. Of his 20 losses (or so), I think like 17 of them were on the road. Angel Robinson Garcia wasn't too shabby of a road warrior either. Scartissue
