Recently while during roadwork I've been getting sharp pains in a certain area of my abs. If you were looking at the body in the anatomical position, it would be the upper-left area of the abdominals, just below the ribs. This pain only occurs during roadwork, never during sparring, sprints or any other exercise. I don't think there are any significant problems with my running form. I also leave atleast a couple of hours between a meal and running. I was just wondering if anybody has any ideas as to what this could be or if anybody else has had similar problems? I've tried taking a break for a while and when I went out last night, same pain.
my obliques ache a bit when running but i think thats normal as i twist alot with my arms. and last week had a very painful stitch on my left side when running but only the one time.
It could be liquids (just something I've been told). I know you're leaving reasonable space between meals and runs, just keep an eye on how much water (or gatorade, what ever you drink) you consume before running. Being hydrated is about drinking water through out the day, little by little. Trying to meet the water intake requirements at once, or drinking water just before running to avoid cramps or just because you're thirsty could be harmful while you workout and could explain the abdominal pain. I haven't really research anything on this since I was told this when I had the same pain and it worked, no real reason for me to look it up if I wasn't suffering anymore, but try it out and see if it helps.
Hydration is a priority of mine, I sip water regularly throughout the day and powerade during and after my main workouts during the day. It's starting to get frustrating as it's impairing my times and ultimately the intensity while out running.
I hope you figure it out. I know that if I drink up too much liquid before running I could get a very similar pain, but don't really know any other reasons.
Sounds like a common stitch, you are out of shape for the length of running you are doing and not breathing right.
Like I say, it's only came around recently, I've even reduced the distance and intensity and still suffered slightly from the pain. I'll try actually reducing the amount of water I drink in the lead up to the run.
