In the late '70s and into the '80s, all my roadwork was done in the evening, mainly because I worked during the day, and my day job was quite physical (this helped overall and core strength). I used to run over uneven fields near my old home where I kept a tree log at the bottom of a short but steep grassy bank. After a mile or so to warm up, I would pick up the log (about 30 lbs or so) and run up the bank with it. When at the top I would launch the log to the bottom, run down, pick it up and do it all over again until exhausted. Talk about leg burn and a bursting chest!! I would then jog to the gym to train.
4 or 5am for me sometimes 6. AM runs though. mental and physical training personal preference just get it done
