agreed. Calloway in years and years of boxing has never beaten a guy near the top ten. I see no reason for that to change. The 9-0 guy he just beat had never beaten a man with a winning record, in fact his opponnets were 3-36 in their most recent fights. Calloway does not deserve a title shot by beating a lot of C and D fighters.

Rob Calloway wins 13th straight fight
    by St. Joseph News-Press
    Thursday, May 22, 2008

ST. LOUIS — St. Joseph boxer Rob Calloway scored a second-round knockout in his return to the ring Thursday night.

Calloway knocked out David Robinson in the second round at the Viking Hotel.

Robinson is a 40-year-old from Oklahoma City. He’s 25-56 with four draws.

Calloway, a cruiserweight, improves to 75-7 with one draw and 59 knockouts. Thursday night’s win was Calloway’s 13th straight victory, all but one of which have been knockouts.

Calloway plans another bout in St. Louis in late June.

    Calloway crushes Robinson!
    Calloway continues cruiser quest!

    May 23, 2008

    By Brian Grammer at ringside

World ranked cruiserweight Rob Calloway (71-7-1) delivered a convincing knockout of David Robinson (25-56) in front of an enthusiastic St. Louis crowd at the Viking Conference Center. Calloway, caught with a couple of good shots in the first round, adjusted to Robinson's tactic of fighting out of the orthodox stance and delivered a devastating 2nd round knockout.

Calloway, who had defeated Robinson in June 2006 via a 3rd round knockout, said that he was "prepared to handle a southpaw tonight" and that "there is nothing that he (Robinson) brought to the ring that I haven't seen before."

"He tried to confuse me by switching from southpaw, but everything went as planned."

Midway in the second round, Calloway found the range and knocked Robinson to his knees with a straight left hand to the nose. Beating the 10 count, Robinson got to his feet and squared up to Calloway who then caught the journeyman with a ferocious overhand right to the head. Robinson, showing a big heart, rose to his feet and attempted to mix it up once more, only to be caught with a quick left-right combination to the head. The referee, Mike England, had seen enough at that point and called a halt to the contest at 2:45 of the second round.

Calloway, who was fighting in his 83rd professional fight, is set to achieve two goals before he retires; to win the cruiserweight championship of the world and to defend it in his 100th career fight. Currently the WBC Americas champion, and their #12 world ranked contender, Calloway is set to defend his title on June 28 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo. Calloway said that with a win that night "I will be in position for a WBC world title shot sometime in the October 2008 timeframe."

Steve Smith, President and CEO of Rumble Time Promotions, said that the recent collaboration between himself and Calloway grew from a professional relationship that has grown personal. "Rob has brought us fighters from St. Joseph for about two years now and because of the trust that we now have for one another, we are in a partnership to get him the world title shot that he deserves".

Smith also said that the June 28th Xtreme Fight Party, which with be a combination of professional boxing and mixed martial arts, at the Scottrade Center will be the first of possibly three cards at the location in the near future. "Dennis Petrullo (General Manager of Scottrade Center) and I are friends and we are hoping to revitalize boxing and showcase the best fighters from the St. Louis area".

In other action on the Fight Night card there were three amateur bouts, three professional boxing matches and an MMA event.

Joe Stoffle (11-12) survived two 1st round knockdowns and two 3rd round point deductions to KO Clinton Boldridge (7-12) at 1:35 of the 4th round in a rough and tumble heavyweight attraction.

At 2:15 of the first round, Walter Foster (3-0) knocked out rookie Lester McKinney (0-1) with a sharp left hand to the jaw.

In a tough fought six round fight, Shawn Hammack (16-6-2) worked behind his combinations to defeat Issiah Henderson (11-9) for a split decision victory. Scores were 58-56, 59-55, and 56-58.

Huh? How do you figure that? He's never beaten a quality Cruiserweight.

His biggest win was probably over another journeyman, Terry Smith, and that was at Heavyweight. Rob's a nice guy, but beating up C level club fighters should not earn you a ranking or a title shot.

Calloway should have stayed the hell away from HW...he could have really been spectacular had he made his whole career at cruiser...what a shame.

A WBO strap for Rob would be great...I'd stand to bet he could take Enzo down the stretch to a UD win.

To further prove my point, once he started making waves at cruiser, he immediately started after the heavyweights as had mediocre results with it fighting so-so fighters like Julius Long and Cliff Couser. Yeah, Terry Smith was his best win, but again becuase squandered a golden opportunity. Four of his seven losses (and his only KOs) came at the hands of top heavys. Pity.:verysad

-To undermine your point, he has never beaten anyone close to a quality cruiser. Not one. So how the hell can he be ranked?

-Julius Long and Cliff Couser are journeyman fighters at best.

-Just because you beat up cab drivers and bouncers doesn't mean you deserve a title crack. Try beating a Cruiswerweight in the top 30 first, then we can talk.

Again, I like Calloway, but he's a regional fighter at best, a guy who can bring fans to state fairs and hotel conference rooms. He has not proven himself of a world title tilt.

Maybe not a title shot, but some credit perhaps?? Calloway is the king of the midwestern clubfighters. He keeps himself in shape, generally gives a decent account of himself when he steps up, and owns the C-D level guys he beats. At HIS level, he's damn good. Not world class, but tops for what he is.

Guys like Calloway deserve more credit, imo. Without blue collar guys like him, the sport of boxing would be in an even sorrier state than it is.

I agree. I said that, he's a step above the Midwest circuit. Guys like are him ARE good for boxing. Not denying that.

But a world title shot should be earned, and longevity and beating up club fighters is not a legitimate way to earn your shot against one of the top 3 fighters in the division.

You and I aren't in any disagreement on this. Calloway has to beat somebody at least at the fringe contender level to justify a title shot - even one of those "tune up" fights champs take.

Problem with Calloway is that he's past whatever prime he had. If he was gonna try to get into the world class game, he should have made his move 10 years ago, 5 at the latest. I think he's just happy doing what he does on the midwest circuit and then serving as an opponent for top HWs - although I think even that is over for him at this point.

Calloway's been padding his record with bums, other than Terry Smith - and, arguably, Cliff Couser - since he lost to McCline.

He even fought an ancient Buck Smith, who started as a welter back in the 80s. Oh, and also ESBs own Stacy Goodson, promoter of that well-known "boxer," Charlie Zelenoff.

He also fought Robinson, with his 23-50 something record TWICE during this stretch. Calloway cleans up on these guys. Clearly he's not much into challenging himself at this point. Why should he at age 40, really?
