It is what it is . Was this fight a robbery ?? Yup it was pretty much a robbery . I had it personally 7-5 for the Krusher. But I can see how how someone could give Ward 6 rnds the most . But that's still not enough to win especially due to that KD . It was a close but very clear win for Kovalev .
Anyone calling this fight a robbery can't score a fight. It was close but Ward won 7 rounds on my card (watched the fight twice paying careful attention to the quality of the punches landed the second time), which is what you need to win the fight. 114-113 was the perfect score.
Not according to official judges. And my post doesn't contradict itself, as some seem to believe that because Kovalev got the knockdown in round 2, it was over. Hence the a knockdown doesn't win a fight unless it ends a fight. Now as far as Kovalev winning more rounds, it was a close fight. there were not more the 3 rounds that each fighter completely controlled, leaving roughly 5, 6 rounds that were close and could have gone either way. The judges liked Wards work better. End of story, it was in no sense of the word a robbery. The only travesty scorecards were Lederman and Rafael. We all knew Rafael couldn't score, but Lederman is slipping. Those are the only 2 that had Kovalev winning the 1st 6 rounds
Ward was relentless. He went Kovalev like a pit bull in a meat wagon. It was very refreshing for me to witness the audacity of Andre Ward as he climbed Mt Kovalev. It was one those Rocky moments, only in real life.
It was a robbery of the biggest scale. "You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time." Anyways, Kovalev is P4P #1.
In the close rounds where kov outlanded ward it was only by a few punches at the same time ward was clearly out boxing him. More to scoring a round son.
And the only people who had Kov winning are the biased non-americans? I'm not an american and yet I see Ward winning. Your statement / claim is InAccurate
I'm not sure if we can still edit the thread name. I've seen much more "disgusting" decisions than this one but the fact that it happened in such an important fight as well as huge disappointment felt right after the fight led me to create the thread. I have went out to create a much more informative, well rounded and thoughtful thread called "Boxing and politics" but apparently it got deleted for some reason, so unfortunately I wasn't able to properly summarize what I felt happened in the fight itself and the circumstances surrounding it. I thought that Ward showed great heart and determination by coming back after the knockdown and making it close in the later rounds. Somehow I knew that he had it in him and never thought that he was going to be knocked out. However, making it close isn't the same thing as winning. In my opinion, Kovalev still outlanded and outboxed Ward in majority of the rounds and his shots were generally more effective as well. That, and scoring a knockdown in addition to legitimately winning 7 rounds, in my opinion guarantees the victory. Even if the fight is scored 6-6 (which is still somewhat legitimate in my opinion) Kovalev still has the edge on the scores because of the KD. For Ward to win means giving him 7 rounds, something that he simply didn't win imo, no matter how we put it, and therefore I don't think the fight could have "gone either way", thus I consider it a robbery decision. In my opinion, the robbery on the scorecards occurs whenever the wrong guy gets gifted the decision while the other guy clearly deserves it. Some robberies are obviously worse than the others, (ironically I hear that one actually happened on the Kovalev-Ward undercard), but the importance of this fight clearly deserved better judging in my opinion. I was not aware that the ref and all 3 judges were American until HBO pointed it out, and I certainly believe that it shouldn't have been the case in this kind of a fight, taking everything into the consideration.
Of course it was a ridiculous decision. Kovalev won at least 4 out of the first 6 rounds with a 10-8 in the 2nd. Now honestly people, did you really not give Kovalev enough rounds following to, at the very least, walk away with a draw? Of course we all know that it wasn't even a draw and that Kovalev clearly won the fight. It's disgraceful, and I wasn't rooting for either fighter.
Kovalev injured and possibly fractured his hand prior to the 6th, and still won going away. The rematch he will badly batter Ward without a doubt in my mind. I like Ward, I like his career, family, record, upbringing story, but come on.
