Great fight! Very happy to have watched it. I watched Yaqui Lopez vs E.M.M a few days before the fight and it really felt like a Light Heavyweight classic.
Well said...a very good point you raise. No it was a poor spectacle. A disappointment. Not a great fight. Totally overhyped by American media lackeys. Totally nowhere near the "superfight" it was hyped up to be between supposedly "elite" fighters, top 1 & 2 p4p etc.
It was a fight where 1 fighter came to box and the other came to wrestle and land the odd jab. That was supposed to be the pinnacle of boxing.
No, that's just bull****. After those early rounds it was obvious there was zero chance of KO and Kovalev was content with trying for the decision.
Absolutely. I would watch a second too! I fear that Ward will go another route and avoid Kovalev at this stage though. A second fight I see Ward fighting his own fight and controlling from the outset. Kovalev to look for the KO as he knows he can hurt Ward. I was very impressed with how Ward adapted & adjusted after Rd4, considering the position he was in. The second fight ends by Ward decision, but wider OR Kovalev KO. I would happily pay for a rematch!
It was alright, not great. Kovalev vs Ward, 811 punches / 12 rounds = 67.5 punches a round. Thurman vs Porter, 1,201 punches / 12 rounds = 100 punches a round. Frampton vs Santa Cruz, 1,670 punches / 12 rounds = 139.1 punches a round. Salido vs Vargas, 2,123 punches / 12 rounds = 176.9 punches a round.
I predicted Ward would win by turning the fight a stinker but was wrong on the first part.. Some very good moments in the fight though so it was not a total stinker part of what made the fight watchable was that you had two of the best fighters doing their thing and it was interesting to see how they dealt with each other.
It was very good, not great. Kov did use effective aggression and pressure, but more like Alexis Arguello type, from long range. Andre did a valiant comeback, but was throwing no combinations, mostly one at a time potshotting, and to make things worse, Kov answered all of Ward's punches with shots of his own. It was competitive, but not close.
good. not great. ward says kovalev doesn't have an inside game, but he mostly clinched on the inside, gaining a dubious decision. he just can't get close to kovalev without grabbing and holding on for dear life.
I liked it, thought it was pretty good. exceeded my expectations for that specific fight . granted , my expectations were pretty low because Kovalev's opponent was ward and I had my expectations backwards for the fighters last night . . Ward was the fighter who exceeded my expectations , Kovalev , well, Kovalev should had been able to fight all 12 rounds like he fought the first 6 rounds . I guess I could be under estimating ward, I know everyone on here rates him highly, I just haven't seen it yet. last night was the first time I've been impressed with ward and it had very little if any to do with any of his skills. What impressed me was the fact that he was so thoroughly dominated , beat up, knocked down, out classed and literally looking like he'd be left for dead, the way he gave everything he had to try getting back into the fight and continue trying to win right to the end was good to see.. I'm so used to seeing fighters accepting defeat much too easily while ward refused to accept defeat and the judges rewarded him with the biggest win in boxing in decades with out winning a single clear round
One of the best fights out there. Two chmapions in their prime, making each other miss, accurate boxing, countrpunching, really a game of who makes the fewest mistakes and has the best timing. If anything Kov suprised me with his boxing ability, especially counterpunching/bodywork and Ward with his conditioning at a higher weight. It was brutal and tiring just watching these guys with their movement by the end of the fight
I enjoyed it, yeah. Even if the action was intermittent in the early rounds, it was still intriguing because every shot seemed to have some sort of significance, and there was always the question of whether Kov would hurt Ward and when/how Ward would work his way back into the fight. Ward then took control in the middle rounds, before Kov won a well-contested back and forth 10th. They split the last couple of rounds, winh both guys landing solid punches in each stanza. So it was an intriguing back and forth contest that featured some good two way action in the later rounds. I'm always down for watching something like that.
