MICHAEL Katsidis confronts Mexican great Juan Manuel Marquez for the WBO and WBA lightweight titles in Las Vegas on Sunday.

"Jump on him straight away and stay on him for as long as you can. Just keep hitting him until you can't hit him any more."

That's the advice of Australia's two-time Olympian and former world boxing champion Robbie Peden to his lifelong mate "Rocky" Katsidis.
Katsidis, who has dedicated the world title fight to his brother Stathi, the Group 1-winning jockey who died four days before he was due to ride Shoot Out in the Cox Plate, will start the fight as a $2.80 underdog. But Peden said Katsidis's aggression could make all the difference at the MGM Grand Casino.

Marquez, who stopped Peden in 10 rounds for the North American featherweight title in Pittsburgh in 2002, said he was confident going in against Katsidis.

"I trained to deal with the style of Katsidis and, with my boxing intelligence and speed, I am prepared for anything," Marquez said.
Already the 37-year-old from Mexico City is pitching up for another fight against his greatest foe, 10-time world champion Manny Pacquiao, against whom he has fought two close and bitter battles.

But Peden said Marquez was making a big mistake if he looked beyond Katsidis. He said a fast start and constant pressure was Katsidis's best shot at upsetting the odds, exactly the kind of fight that suits his fellow Queenslander. "It's going to be a tough ask," said Peden, who held the IBF junior lightweight title in 2005 and now works mentoring Aboriginal youth in Queensland and Victoria.

"Marquez will go down in history as one of the greatest Mexican fighters of all time and he was just too good for me back in 2002.

"The typical Mexican fighter is a brawler with a big punch, but Marquez is a whole different kind of fighter.

"He has plenty of power, but he's slick and crafty, a brilliant counter-puncher. No matter what I tried, he was ahead of the game. And since then he has won the world featherweight, junior lightweight and lightweight titles."

Peden fought at the Barcelona and Atlanta Olympics and won a gold medal at the 1994 Edmonton Commonwealth Games.

He knocked out American Nate Campbell for the IBF junior lightweight world title in Melbourne in 2004.

Peden, who was among the 1000 mourners at Stathi Katsidis's funeral in Toowoomba on October 28, said grief could be the catalyst for his brother to make history.

"Don't be surprised if all the emotion of it produces a truly great performance from Michael," Peden said.

In case you didn't know, Marquez made Peden quit after he made him vomit from a body shot. (5:36 is the blow, with the red foam spilling out into the bucket in the corner soon after.)

I know Katsidis is the bigger, stronger fighter, but I don't know about being the bigger puncher. I don't know if using the pressure style would be the best idea a younger, bigger Juan Diaz did have some success early. Katsidis can use that he is a bigger puncher than Diaz, but he'll also pay the price for leaving himself open and JMM throws a hell of an uppercut. JMM will figure him out. Katsidis's best chance is to box JMM the first half and if that's not working then use his usual brawling style. Marquez TKO9 Katsidis

I agree. I think that ultimately, Katsidis cannot outbox him, nor can he outfight him (even though his chances are much more favorable trying to do so.) Diaz tried both methods and failed. I think Marquez will use his speed to make Katsidis taste similar defeat.
