Robert Świerzbiński vs. Rafał Jackiewicz II, 10 rounds @ middleweight

 

This is for the vacant Republic of Poland 160lb title. (previously worn by Maciej Sulęcki and Bartłomiej Grafka)

 

One minor note of (mild) interest from the undercard: former European-level super featherweight contender and onetime Polish national lightweight champion Krzysztof Cieślak made his return, over three years after initially retiring, with "The Scorpion" outpointing an 8-22-1 opponent in a 4-rounder at light welterweight.

 

Anthems and then techno...and down to business!

 

Round 1

Świerzbiński is unloading jab after jab into Jackiewicz's face, turning like a sundial and plowing down low with a few underhanded rights on the stomach. Jackiewicz is pumping out counter jabs into the guard to create a diversion and then flailing up top with mace-like right hands or hurtling inside to flip uppercuts from the chest up into the bottom of Świerzbiński's chin, but not making contact very cleanly in any event. Świerzbiński is casually pinning his forearms together in order to screen out the jabs and lazily buoying himself to either side to make Jackiewicz miss the rest.

Round 2

Świerzbiński is standing tall as he strafes with a yawning gait in an outward unhurried spiral, making Jackiewicz expend fuel getting to him and then petrifying him with double or triple jabs fluttering near his eyes, making him lift his guard so that Świerzbiński can shovel right hands into the midsection. Jackiewciz is clasping his palms over his ears as he bends all the way inside and frantically lathers up combinations, throwing uppercuts narrowly from the center of his breastbone up into the middle of Świerzbiński's chin, and Świerzbiński is content to cruise around him clockwise dusting his temples & the backs of his gloves with hooking flurries.

Nobody cares about old Braveheart except me, eh? Fickle sport.

In his nick this guy was a legit action hero, Poland's answer to someone like Gatti.

Shot to bits now, though...but we owe it to him to at least see his final campaign through until its bitter end, for all the blood he spilled & shed in the past in his rhomboid gladiatorial arena.

 

Round 3

Świerzbiński is swarming Jackiewicz and starting to crunch the right side of his face with left hooks. Jackiewicz is repeatedly frozen in place and now begins to paw at his right eye, as though it were swollen from the punches or perhaps lacerated by part of Świerzbiński's glove. Świerzbiński is ambling to his left and diagonally slightly outward, pointing his rear foot as though about to step off the apron into the crowd, and then when Jackiewicz takes a pursuing step inside to begin uppercutting with both hands in alternation Świerzbiński meets him in the middle with a shoeshine on the face, steps left, and punctuates with a hook.

Round 4

Świerzbiński is doing a number on Jackiewicz, albeit in a 'death by a thousand cuts' manner. Not sitting down on any of his punches or even taking great care to aim one single blow in any exchange to land flush on target, Świerzbiński just keeps sprinkling leather on him while turning him, and Jackiewicz has resorted to pressing in close and tying up to forestall the light patter raining down upon his face at even medium-close range or further. Jackiewicz tomahawks down with his right glove to attempt to intercept & bat down some of Świerzbiński's jabs that set up his flurries, but little offense mounted by the old warrior and he can not defend against the rest of Świerzbiński's arsenal with anything but clinches.

Round 5

Świerzbiński is taking a breather this round, pushing the left arm out suspended (not snapping it enough to call it a jab) like a lawnmower to get inside and now initiating clinches himself, diving in with his face wedged against Jackiewicz's chest. Jackiewicz hammers down at the back of Świerzbiński's head with his right glove, then when the ref forces a break comes forward jabbing into his guard and occasionally finding the bridge of his nose. Świerzbiński either showing his rival mercy or legitimately short on gas and regrouping. Jackiewicz a bit reinvigorated either way, having fun in there, even does a bit of an RJJ impression with his right glove swung all the way behind his back as though about to bowl a strike, clanging his fist against Świerzbiński's left temple despite telegraphing his blow so obviously. Świerzbiński looks to be...not exactly a defensive wizard, if pressed on the backfoot.

Round 6

Świerzbiński is leading with jabs but Jackiewicz seems unwilling to relinquish momentum & control again just yet. Jackiewicz is dashing to his right, stomping the corresponding foot down to stake it firmly in place wherever it lands, then partially bend his knee and load up on a big surging uppercut from an odd angle. Świerzbiński is a bit taken aback that Jackiewicz has carried over this much vim & vigor from the sporting pity round preceding this one, and is melting himself over in a clumsy sideways lean while pumping out light defensive jabs. Grinning and warming to his task, Jackiewicz is putting on the pressure - not pretty, and not setting any connect percentage records, but getting the job done.

I'll be damned...getting interesting.

 

Round 7

Świerzbiński is now scissoring his legs, skirting the ropes, and dropping his neck & head down and out with exaggerated motions whenever Jackiewicz comes in with piston combos or even feints. Jackiewicz is throwing a fake light jab at the face to get Świerzbiński to bend to his side and then anticipating where his face will be and grazing him with a sneaky ambushing right uppercut. Świerzbiński is keeping his distance and pumping out jabs in multiples. Jackiewicz presses in. Head clash. Both given time, walking it off, Świerzbiński cut pretty badly and oozing from the outermost corner of his left eye. Time in. Świerzbiński, enraged, pounds on Jackiewicz's arms with a prolonged shoeshine, but Jackiewicz simply laughs and nods approvingly while blocking virtually all of it, then responding with a couple of right hands, baiting Świerzbiński to swap blows with him until the bell rings.
