He silenced the "scared to fight" "he has a glass jaw" crowd. It was a competitive fight, regardless of who you saw winning the bout. Frankly, I don't think either man truly separated himself from the other man. If it's a 15 round bout, I think it gets clearer. And this is exactly the kind of match up that SHOULD go 15.

    Very close bout.

If Kovalev got the decision, I'd still say they need to rematch. The bout was great to watch and it was refreshing to see two in their prime champions in the ring. I just wish they'd fight a 15 rounder.

Referees have the best view ,literally right there and see every punch that lands, when a referee comes out and speaks its telling of what actually happened . I think its good we get a non bias look at someone viewing the fight better than the fighters themselves because thats his job to see where punches are landed first and foremost .

I wonder why referees were removed from officially scoring fights then. At one time the referee and two judges were used to score some fights.

Not really. He was the referee and will be regularly quoted for his pick.

Still doesn't change the outcome of the fight. Judges are positioned around the ring. The ref only has one perspective. Some "dirty" fighters do their best work at the side the ref doesn't see. I would submit that fans watching on large screen hd tv get a better perspective of the fight than the ref.

Of course it won't change the outcome of the fight, but the referee of the actual fight's opinion still means a whole lot.

Not to me. If it didn't affirm the opinions of the people that thought that Ward lost, it wouldn't mean anything to them either.

It was a competitive fight. There were a lot of close rounds that could've gone either way. Obviously the judges gave most of the close rounds to Ward so I can understand why people would be critical of the outcome.

I personally don't have a dog in the fight so I just enjoyed watching 2 elite level fighters go at it. I could easily see why people thought Kovalev won the fight, but Andre winning it isn't so far fetched either. It was a competitive fight all the way through.

Because this isnt the 40's anymore referees cannot count how many punches accurately enough with worrying about making a safe clean fight ,alot goes into judging with other statistics in modern era based on what they keep track of ,this doesnt mean anything with getting a better view and feel for the fight itself...having one person referee judging would be o.k but the different higher ups would never allow it as its easier to appoint 3 different people to mask bad decisions like this one. Referees would be screened to the tee and have to call it down the line. Having one person decide a fight would bring great pressure in todays game to get the right winner.

I don't know about you but I rather have three people making the same bad decision than one person making a bad decision.

The ref can't be considered impartial because he inter acts with the fighters. A fighter might say something to him that he doesn't like.

Well thats why the governing bodies made the way the system is now ,it would be harder to find a payed off referee than 3 judges who get the nod to "GIVE " rnds to a selected home guy . I knew a few referees and their pretty honest ,i dont feel judges actually know what their looking at more than not . Many judges that are appointed dont even watch boxing ppl are gullible to assume judges are smart they are pickedas "FAVORS" to support certain fighters usually .
