Lmao. I just saw the fight. First of all, he gives no warning at all to Glowacki for a huge shot to the back of the head. I’m not sure if he even saw Breidis’ elbow either and just assumed something happened and gave a point deduction. Then, he was yelling at Glowacki to get up. Why? You don’t tell a fighter how hurt he is if you really saw the clean foul he got hit with. It doesn’t matter if he was faking it, that’s not your call. Guarantee if that was Bernard Hopkins that’s a DQ for him right there. Then he fails to hear the bell. I heard it easily. When he finally realizes it’s over because people are screaming at him, he yells TIME! a few times, but it’s too old and fragile to get in there, they totally ignore him and keep going and Glowacki gets brutally KD’d. He STILL gives him a count, knowing full well that the round was over and makes no attempt to compensate in anyway. Retire this guy. He’s gonna get someone killed.
In this game bad nights can cost lives, only the best referee's at the top of their game should be allowed to work. Joe Cortez was an excellent ref, then had a bad night, then rarely had a good one. When it's time to bow out, it's time.
Not his finest work, I agree. My inclination is to give someone the benefit of the doubt, at least once, but the posters above are right that the margin for error has to be very small in a combat sport.
You regularly see referees screw up, but this was on another level and definitely influenced the outcome of the fight on too many levels. Taking their ages in mind, it's indeed time to take both Byrds to the farm as it is ridiculous that they're still in the game. Robert Byrd has always been a good referee, but be real here... this was even beyond Laurence Cole level bad.
I thought everyone was exaggerating until I watched the fight yesterday. He missed far too much (including serious infractions) for that to have only been a 3 round fight. I won't say he should simply be put out to pasture, the end, I'm thinking that he should be demoted to maybe 4 rounders as a probationary period to see where he is as far as reffing. Definitely shouldn't be officiating title fights though.
