This guy, I think I never heard of this guy being discussed here... He has quite a record, fought everyone, he lost a decision to LaMotta that boxrec says it was booed and bad, then he beat LaMotta in the rematch. Went 15 rounds with Robinson... Beat many other top 10 guys like Gene Hairston, Jose Basora... France does have some history in Boxing let´s be honest, shame we don´t have any french poster in the Classic...
a Great Fighter... a Welter cum Middleweight squat, strong & a box fighter as I understand it, one of the Best to ever come out of France & Europe. I call him "the Proof" Fighter, proof that the TOP Fighters from any Boxing Nation are as good as any and should be in the mix & considerations of historical greats... Boxing is far too rich & opportunity is not favoured all and Robert Villemain, among others, is Proof that these Top men can hang, beat and compete with any. a great, great fighter forsure.
He seemed to have LaMotta's number, & was a pretty good contender outside of that as well. It was just his misfortune that Robinson not only existed, but moved up in weight at around the exact same time that he peaked as a contender - otherwise it might've been Villemain fighting for (& winning) the title from LaMotta instead.
A very good fighter who has imo, a better record than Cerdan who gets all the glory for French middles.
Hi Buddy. Agree on all counts, you could also make a case for another very good French MW not getting maybe all the credit he deserves, that being Charles Humez, a teak tough hairy chested furious fighter, who by all accounts was utterly fearless, who beat the likes of, Hayes, Stock, Mitri, Langlois, Dauthuille, Janiro, Scholz, Hairston, Panther, good fighters one and all.
