The Duran cult on this forum are pretty adamant "Montreal Duran" beats the best version of Sugar Ray Robinson, so I'm no surprised he's rated #1 by some.

No. But he ranks Top 10 in my book.Had he beaten Hagler or Leonard twice, maybe a case could have been made.

I see no case for top 5

    SRR
    Armstrong
    Langford
    Greb
    Charles

All have imo a better claim..I think 8-15 is more realistic

    6 Gans
    7 Moore
    8 Pep
    9 Benny Leonard
    10-12 Louis Ali Duran

To me I think this 7-12 range is more defendable. But at the end of the day they are just lists and opinions

New thread idea: "reasons why Rex Layne should be ranked higher than DeJesus"

I agree with a lot of this...except for that 30 number? Not sure if you were just trying to establish an emphatic diffence between them. I have been called a SRL basher, and to me he is still clear top 20 ATG at the 17 spot or so. To me there is about 5-10 spots in between. Not sure I see 30...or even 30 names to put over Ray?

To be no. 1 I think Duran would have had to do the following:
-Not quit in the fight with Leonard
-Not balloon in weight between fights throughout the 80s and be so damn inconsistent
-Not get flattened by Tommy Hearns
-Probably quit a few years earlier

He's top 10 all time p4p for me, which is pretty remarkable considering No Mas. His lightweight reign and the win over Leonard to become welterweight champ were all-time great achievements. Add the comeback wins over Moore and Barkley and you have a unique fighter in boxing history.

I think if Ray Robinson had won the light-heavyweight title he'd have been an even firmer lock for no. 1 in history. I still think he is but there's been a bit of a push for Greb and Langford in recent years.

I think Duran reigned over a very mediocre bunch of lightweights, with a very few exceptions, and his best win is against Ray Leonard, who I say is overrated.
So, really, I can't rate Duran as high as many here have him.

His lightweight opposition pales in comparison to Benny Leonard and Leonard beat them all in title fights too. The case for Duran being #1 at Lightweight is hard IMO.

How can he be best ever? He never knocked out an elite fighter. All the greats beat him. He was great on the inside and had great instincts and he was a great fighter, but if a fighter made him fight their fight he could almost be ineffective.
